Roman New Year: Before the Julian calendar, the Roman year had 10 months, beginning in March and ending in December.
The Ides of March: March 15th was a deadline for settling debts in Rome, but is now infamous as the day Julius Caesar was assassinated.
Anglo-Saxon Name: They called it Hlyd monath ("Stormy month") or Hraed monath ("Rugged month").
Equinox: The March equinox occurs around March 20th-21st, when day and night are of equal length.
Hibernation Ends: March is when many animals start waking up from hibernation.
"In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb": This proverb suggests March begins with stormy weather and ends with calmer, spring-like days.
Birth Flower & Stone: The March birth flower is the Daffodil; birthstones are Aquamarine and Bloodstone.
Famous Firsts: Alexander Graham Bell made the first phone call on March 10, 1876. The first Monopoly game was invented on March 7, 1933.
