The coaches number one priority is the safety and well-being of the student athletes. The coaching staff monitors the weather closely at all times. All decisions regarding practices and competitions are based on available information (forecast, temperature, wind chill, weather radar, etc.) and what we believe is in the best interest of the team. Any decision to cancel practice due to inclement weather will be announced on Final Forms and Remind NO LATER THAN NOON THAT DAY. If practice or competitions are cancelled suddenly or without advance notice, we will alert families as soon as possible.
Thirty-Minute Rule: Competition or practice shall be suspended once lightning has been recognized or thunder is heard. It is required to wait at least 30 minutes after the last flash of lightning is witnessed or thunder is heard prior to resuming practice or competition. Given the average rates of thunderstorm travel, the storm should move 10-12 miles away from the area. This significantly reduces the risk of local lightning flashes. Any subsequent lightning or thunder after the beginning of the 30-minute count shall reset the clock, and another count shall begin (OHSAA Lightning and Inclement Weather Policy PDF).
