This year, our students with and without disabilities will collaborate on a conservation project to attract native birds to our campus. Our young naturalists will develop a schoolyard habitat by adding trees, bushes, and perennials that provide nuts and fruits for birds throughout the year. (Mark says this addresses 6th grade science standards.)
Our student buddies will plant shrubs and perennials. They will also build nesting boxes to add to the area. The partners will collect data and submit their observations online. Special attention will be given to the bird type and number of eggs for each nesting box.
ACTION Club students will attend a series of Lunch & Learns conducted by career mentors in the fields of horticulture and wildlife (Wingard's Nursery and SC Wildlife). The idea is for mentors to work alongside the teens during these sessions of inquiry and discovery. The students will learn from the mentors, and then they will teach our students with special needs.
