Protect: Air

Plants in the Classroom

What students will learn

7th grade students will work to provide and maintain air quality plants in every classroom. This green initiative provides students with meaningful learning experiences that have positive impacts on air quality in classrooms and increase awareness throughout the community. Students will learn how to propagate philodendron plants in order to create plants to provide to classrooms around the school. Student volunteers gain valuable social and business skills by helping to host a plant sale at the end of the school year.

what students will do

7th grade students will work to propagate plants in the green house and then provide them to classrooms around the school. Additional 7th grade students will decorate recycled cans from the cafeteria as planters. Students will continuously measure the number of classrooms with air-purifying plants until we reach 100% of classrooms.

how students will teach others

Students will create plant tags with a digital link to literature about the importance of protecting our indoor air-quality, the benefits of air-purifying plants and plant care. These tags will go on the plants provided to classrooms along with a short power point/video presentation to explain the project to staff and students receiving plants. The plant tags will also be provided to customers at the spring plant sale helping to inform the community about indoor air quality and the positive effects on air-purifying plants.
