In the story "The White Quail" the complex relationship revealed between characters Harry and Mary was developed through various symbols including the garden, the locked door, and the white quail to depict that while they do both have a sense of longing and need for each other, they don't understand one another due to their fear of openness within their relationship.
In the story "The White Quail" the author John Steinbeck utilizes symbolism, personification, and description to create misunderstandings and conflicts in order to develop the complex relationship between Harry and Mary, where each person loves the other and wishes to maintain a relationship but fails to properly communicate, thus leading to loneliness and a lack of understanding of each other.
Mary's and Harry's relationship in "The White Quail" is portrayed to be built upon idealized love and unrealistic expectations for one another, which ultimately reveals the consequences of Mary's perfectionistic antics and Harry's inability to voice his own desires.
