In "The White Quail" the complexity of the relationship between Harry and Mary is that Harry is an intimate and open person toward Mary while Mary is isolated and restrictive toward Harry.

The complex relationship between Harry and Mary is in the way they inevitably keep each other at a consistent arms length, with Mary wanting to protect herself and the parts of her she isn't comfortable with allowing the vulnerability of, and in turn pushing Harry away or keeping the door locked, while simultaneously Harry attempts to keep Mary's troubles at bay and keep her happy, as a result keeps the vulnerable parts of himself or his wants away from her, and their relationship permanently distant. 

In "The White Quail," Mary obsessively tries to manipulate others' perceptions of her, while Harry only wants a genuine and intimate relationship which can't be granted due to Mary's nature.
