The mission of Junior Beta Club is to promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students.
Dr. John West Harris, a farm boy who became a wartime flying instructor, lived as both an adventurer and scholar. He was passionate about education, holding degrees from Wofford College and a Ph.D. from The University of North Carolina. His love for learning fueled his passion for teaching, where he emphasized that both academics and life experiences are key to success. Dr. Harris truly embodied the idea of “leading by example.”
In 1934, he turned his dream into reality by founding National Beta, an organization dedicated to honoring students for their achievements, character, and leadership. Starting with just 15 members at Landrum High School in South Carolina, National Beta has grown into an international organization with 500,000 members each year. Despite its growth, National Beta has stayed true to Dr. Harris’s original vision and values.
