Understanding the Triage Process
Triage is an important part of the support provided at AFS. Through this process, staff review each student’s academic progress, attendance, behavior, adjustment, and overall response to the program. The purpose is to identify strengths, address concerns early, determine appropriate interventions, and help students make progress toward their individual goals.
Families support the triage process by staying informed, communicating with school staff, reinforcing expectations at home, and encouraging students to take responsibility for their choices and progress. Information gathered during triage may also help guide decisions about additional support and the student’s readiness for a successful transition back to the home school.
Review progress reports and communication from AFS
Discuss triage goals with your student
Reinforce agreed upon expectations at home
Encourage attendance, participation, and completion of assignments
Recognize growth while continuing to address areas of concern
Contact AFS staff when you have questions about your student’s progress
If you have concerns about your student’s academic progress, attendance, behavior, social and emotional well being, or adjustment to school, please contact me. When appropriate, we can begin the Multi Tiered System of Supports process and schedule a time for the team to meet, review available information, identify the student’s strengths and needs, and develop a plan for support.
Parents and guardians are equal and valued members of the team. Your knowledge of your student, questions, concerns, and ideas are important to the planning process. Students are also encouraged to participate in meetings and take an active role in setting goals, identifying needed support, and monitoring their progress.
