Subitizing

What does it mean to subitize?

Subitize is the ability to tell the number of objects in a set, quickly, without counting. In school, students subitize with ten frames, dot patterns, rekenreks and even fingers! It is a fundamental skill in the development of number sense.

Play games!

Playing games with dice help children learn the visual patterns for 1-6. Math and learning are FUN!

How many do you see?

Here are some cards for you to use at home to practice subitizing with your child.

The important question isn't just "how many do you see?", but "how do you see them?".

We encourage students to explain their thinking and describe how they "see it".
