In 4th grade, the focus was to compare fractions as well as add and subtract with like denominators. Students also explore multiplying a fraction by a whole number.
In 5th grade, students extend these understandings by:
~ Solving real-world problems with fractions
~ Using benchmark fractions and number sense to check for reasonable answers.
~ Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by finding equivalent fractions
~ Representing the context of a fraction word problem using a variety of models.
~ Multiplying and dividing fractions using a variety of strategies and explain my thinking using models, pictures, and words.
