In Kindergarten, the focus was on parts of number to 5.
In 1st grade, students will build on their understandings of parts of number to include the numbers 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.
Fluency and flexibility with numbers are the hallmarks of mathematical thinking. For our students to develop strong number sense, they must understand how numbers can be composed and decomposed. That’s why learning the combinations for numbers to 10 is a primary focus in our 1st grade classrooms.
What does it mean to "decompose" a number into "parts"?
7 can be decomposed into two parts many different ways... 6 and 1, 5 and 2, etc.
How many different ways can you decompose 8 into two parts?
Games to play at home to support your child's understandings of parts of number.
Parts of Number
These ten frames show four different ways to decompose 7:
6 and 1 make 7
5 + 2 = 7
1 and 6 is 7
7 = 3 + 4
How many other ways can you decompose 7 on a ten frame? Try it here!
