Name Changes

Students who wish to change their name in pursuit of their education in Lexington Public Schools have two options.

Preferred Name Change

Within our data management system Aspen, students can list their preferred name, which will show up for all educators with access to that student's Aspen record, which in most cases is limited to the student's current teachers. This does not change the student's LPS login information (email, Google Drive, etc.) or legal name that is reported to external organizations, such as the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

To identify a preferred name, please contact the student's school counselor or assistant principal/dean.

Formal Name Change

Massachusetts law allows a student to change their name on school records at any time. Per DESE regulations, students ages 14 or older or who are in high school do not need parent/guardian consent. This process does not require any legal documentation and will result in the new name being listed as the formal name for a student on Aspen, and it will change all student account information (email, Google Drive, etc.). The new name will be used with all external organizations, including the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for MCAS requirements, among others, and transcript and record requests from school, colleges, and universities.

To institute a formal name change, the student or family should contact the student's school counselor or the Director of Equity & Student Supports.
