Graphic Design provides an introduction to the fundamentals of digital design principles (typography, color theory, layout, etc.) as well as the concepts behind effective visual messaging. Through the use of design software programs, including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, students will engage in a series of projects that require them to create real-world, commercial design examples, while producing also expressing their individual and creative voices. Throughout the semester, students will add their completed work to an online digital portfolio.
Assignment 1: Discovering Your Visual Aesthetic
Students will research three design items that appeal to their personal sense of aesthetics, compare these items to a specific art movements, put their findings into a slideshow and then present the slideshow to the class.
Assignment 2: Designing a Logo and a Business Card
Students will use Adobe Illustrator to design their own logo and a business card, first producing 10 rough sketches of different possible logo designs and later incorporating this logo onto a business card.
Assignment 3: Creating a Typeface
Students will use Adobe Illustrator to design their own typeface, first producing 6 characters (R, S, O, g, f, a) and later designing a poster incorporating these characters.
Assignment 4: Designing a Magazine Cover
Students will research a number of magazine covers, n noting images, use of text and overall layout, and then use Adobe Photoshop to create their own magazine cover.
Assignment 5: Designing a Book Cover
Students will choose a favorite book, research the transformations in design of this book’s cover over the years and then create two new covers for this book - a contemporary version and one from another era of their choosing.
Assignment 6: Creating a Package Design
Students will use Adobe Illustrator to create a package design for a product. The finished piece will be a 2-D layout that can be transformed into a 3-D “wrap around” product packaging.
