Foundations of Fine Art

Foundations of Fine Art is an introductory visual art course which is a prerequisite for all other visual arts courses at Lexington High School. In this class, students will experiment with a range of media and understand how artists utilize various art elements, design principles and vocabulary to better their art making skills. Throughout the course, students will explore image-making and personal interpretation through both observation and imagination.

Assignment 1: Pattern and Texture Drawings

Students will create a black and white composition with a unified theme that integrates a variety of patterns and textures into a thoughtful and dynamic piece.

Assignment 2: Blind Contours/Gestures

Students will understand what makes for an effective still life, create their own still life example with everyday household objects, and then draw four different 6” X 4.5” still life compositions.

Assignment 3: Perspective Drawings

Students will learn about one and two-point perspective and then create a detailed drawing of part of the classroom by utilizing either one or two-point perspective.

Assignment 4: Collage

Students will learn about the fundamental principles of collage/montage, look at various collage examples done by students and professional artists and then create their own collage.

Assignment 5: Cardboard Sculptures

Students will create a cardboard sculpture that depicts a subject of their choosing and then paint the finished sculpture with mixed primary colors.
