1619 Station 2: The Trans-Atlantic &

Intra-American Slave Trade

The 1619 Project starts its examination of the legacy of slavery by first going back in time to the Trans-Atlantic and Intra-American slave trade. In Homegoing, Yaa Gyasi does not include a story about Esi’s journey in a slave ship. While she shared her own reasons for this during her visit to LHS in 2018, historians and academics have since been able to create a 3D reconstruction of one slave ship: the L’Aurore. This is one ship whose complete plan has survived and allowed us to gain a more complete understanding of the conditions on these slave ships.

Watch the video that teaches viewers about the L’Aurore, and consider how this adds to your learning about the Tran-Atlantic and Intra-American slave trade. Then, move on to Station 3!
