1619 Project

Four hundred years after enslaved Africans were first brought to Virginia, most Americans still don’t know the full story of slavery. The goal of The 1619 Project is to reframe American history, making explicit how slavery is the foundation on which this country is built. The 1619 Project presents essays and literary works that explore how slavery shaped the founding of our nation as well as its contemporary impact on our society.

In this multi-part exhibit, you will interact with some of the materials from this ongoing project. While you move through each part of the exhibit, consider how this project complicates, adds to, and/or challenges some of the stories about America’s founding and identity. Which myths of American history does the 1619 Project disprove, reframe, and highlight?

Due to the immensity of the 1619 Project, the stations that follow in this exhibit have been curated to give you a sense of this project in the small amount of time we have to spend at today's museum. All stations were inspired or adapted from the 1619 Project Archive.
