The author truly outdid himself when he wrote This Book. I really enjoyed the read. It is a thriller that involves a vampire. If you enjoy vampires and a good scare then this is the book for you. If not I would still consider this book form a spark your interest in the genre.
It’s gives us a detailed explanation of what happened to him and his father during the holocaust. It tells all of the horrible things they had to witness and do. They were fed so little and we forced to do much labor. Many Jews were killed and it was a horrible time period. He needed his father, and stuck with him for it all.
1984 is a dystopian futuristic novel written by world famous author, George Orwell. This book takes a look at a futuristic totalitarian regime, where the government controls everything. The government essentially brainwashed the citizens and are made to think whatever the government wants them to think. The protagonist of the book is Winston and he wants to question and rebel against the government. This story shows the frightening fate of the world when controlled by a totalitarian government with little freedom. I would recommend this book for high schoolers as it explores some heavy things.
This book follows a young man named Dorian Gray. This story is set in England in the 1800s. The story starts off by introducing our protagonist and his innocent ways. However, after a painting was made for him and he befriended the very influential Lord Henry, he started to lose his innocence by doing bad deeds. Every deed he does mysteriously affects the painting. The rest of the story is about how Dorian Gray covers his mistakes and his fate. I personally did not like this book all that much and I consider it an older read.

The book is about 12 year old girl named Sophie Foster who can read minds. But in a flash, she's forced to be taken away from her home into a completely new world when a mysterious boy name Fitz find her. In this book she is met with challenges and finds out that she isn't just normal. I really the plot of this book of how she finds out more about herself and how much she risks in order to save the people she loves. I recommend it for anyone who loves fantasy and magic!
This book was amazing. Morris writes characters and speaks about black struggles, without it being the complete center of the book rather having the focus be black excellence. She also chooses to have the main character be someone who has been in (and remembers) a mostly POC community and a mostly white community, yet her view on the world is differs from the other black people around her (who went through similar experiences). Also I was able to follow the rules of the game very well which was great, since I usually struggle with the rules of card games, so I didn't feel the need to skip those scenes. This was a great book with a powerful message, while still being a doable read.
When the kids know about Boo's bad reputation, they still want him to go outside and play with them. Boo leaves stuff in the tress for them and watches them. One night when Jem and Scout were walking home someone tried to kill them because their father was defending a black person in court. But someone saves them.
Brutus joins a team of people who want to kill caesar. although caesar has done nothing personally to brutus he feels obligated to help rome. together them come up with a plan to kill him. if they successfully kill him who would become the next king?
This book was very good and the author does a great job at explaining how one could fall down the slippery slope of painkillers. The relationships that she forms with the other characters are real and make sense, and play a crucial role in the story. The book also played very well into my feelings, joy and empathy all at the right parts (and I won't lie I shed a tear or two). I would definitely recommend to a friend (I actually already have), but I would be careful because it honestly felt like I was reading someone's thoughts more than a book so I'd check to make sure it wouldn't be triggering.
This is a novel about a girl named Mia who goes to her family's heritage country, China, for summer vacation. She is extremely reluctant to go and she feels this will be the worst 2 months of her life. Her aunt told her a story multiple times of an ancient emperor who disguised himself until his death and now he has treasure waiting to be found. When her aunt goes missing, Mia suspects she went looking for the treasure or she's in danger. Now she goes on an adventure of the century, looking for both the hidden treasure and her aunt with a series of riddles.
This book was great. I have been looking for a good dragon book and was struggling but this was a ray of hope. The relationship that Eragon has with his dragon is beautiful and magical (pun intended). Also, I really appreciate the powerful female dragon, who gets him out of a pinch a couple of times. While Eragon's dragon has motherly tendencies that aren't her whole personality like many other female dragons are written. Though it takes a second to figure out all the new vocabulary and places that are completely new, once you do it is truly beautiful and easy to follow.
The Catcher In the Rye is a novel written by J.D Salinger. This novel takes the reader throughout the main character's journey to development. The main character of this novel, Holden has a hard time accepting the fact that children do mentally develop and do not remain in their innocence forever. He faces many obstacles through his travel of finding himself out which impact him in the long term. Along with facing many challenges, Holden also meets many new people who each represent a certain part of this society. This novel also had many incidents which the reader could connect to from their own lives. I would recommend this novel to a friend
Liesel and her brother, who died on the train, were adopted by Hans and Rosa Huberman. Hans teaches Liesel how to read and write and even buys books for her. When they secretly adopt a jew, their life becomes harder and more secretive. It was their job to protect him
The Kite Runner, while focusing on deep themes, such as trauma and regret, maintains its appeal throughout the novel, but a few missteps ultimately make some sections far less enjoyable than others. One of the biggest issues with the novel is its pacing and the abrupt changes to it. One section will be action packed and be a dramatic read, but then the text will completely jump to a new, more calm portion in only a paragraph or two. Although the pacing was a major negative, the massive character development between each character and seeing their relationships evolve allowed even the slow sections to seem interesting. Watching Amir, the main character continuously reflects and grow was another positive that never got boring to read through. For Housseini's first novel, it is phenomenal and I highly recommend everyone to experience it!
A book full of emotion and a ton of surprises in every corner. The story does start off a bit slow but starts to find a pace as it gets deeper and deeper into the plot. The complexity of many of the characters within the book make it an interesting read that can leave you wondering as to whether you really like one of the characters or not. This provides a realistic shade to the book and it is a nice touch to add on to an already good plot. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy a revenge story or a redemption story. The plot is also full of drama for people who are looking for this within a book. Overall, this book is probably more suitable to certain people and the plot is not for everyone. I think that it is very well written and organized for anyone who wants to read it.
This book is based on a true story of the shark attacks of 1916 on Jersey shore. The book talks about Chet Roscow, a kid who stays at his uncle's house in NJ. He has three new friends and he spends his time swimming at the creek, until the news says that there is a massive shark killing people near the Atlantic Coast. Once when swimming, Chet gets pranked by his friends that there was a shark in the water and Chet gets angry at them and leaves. He then pranks them back which causes his friends to get angry as well. The rest of the story is how Chet encounters a real shark and how he saves his friends.
Percy Jackson seems to be a troubled boy with dyslexia and ADHD but normal otherwise. One day on a field trip however, Percy has a crazy vision that his assistant teacher turned into an evil eagle that wanted to kill him while his actual teacher, Mr. Brunner threw him a ballpoint pen and when he had uncapped it, it was a huge sword. Later that day his mom tells him they would go to Montauk (since he lived in NYC) for a vacation. When he wakes up in the middle of the night and sees his mom talking to his friend Grover and that they both tell him they need to leave and drive all the way back from Montauk to this “strawberry farm” but encounter a monster from Greek mythology. This monster “killed” Percy’s mother and when Grover and Percy escaped the monster they went to the field and Percy was filled in on everything. His friend Grover was a Saytr his teacher Mr. Brunner is a centaur who’s actual name is Chiron and this strawberry farm is a camp for Half-Bloods. Percy was also Poseidon’s only son of that camp and was told that Zeus’ master bolt has been stolen and he suspected Percy’s father. Percy had to go on a quest with two of his friends to locate the bolt and prove his fathers innocence while fighting monsters and interacting with gods. Will he be able to do it?
1984’s premise is how a dystopian society operates in order to keep its civilians obedient and act like sheep in order to produce the “perfect” society that the officials desire. The main character Winston understands that for his safety he should act the way Big Brother, the “supreme” leader, demands of the people in Oceania but Winston wants to have more freedom in his own life which is condemned in the dystopian world known as Oceania. Winston seeks out a woman who believes she should have sexual freedom in Oceania named Julia, and they begin a relationship, knowing that it is not allowed. Winston and Julia both crave a “breath of fresh, new air” and found that within each other but was discovered by secret supporters of Big Brother that have been watching them since the beginning. The way that Big Brother is always watching the people of Oceania shows the disturbing ways that a dystopian society operates and leaves the reader thinking about their own lives and the way the world works.
Book was nice, it included more photos of Levittown in it's prime and it also featured a separate chapter for a family that grew 4 generations in Levittown. It was fun to see the journey of the family as they grew up and attended Levittown school systems. I'd have to say that the book was an 8 for me. The reason why is because the book showed a ton of pictures from the previous book and I'm not fond of that because I already read the first book. Seeing the pictures again made me have to skip over a couple of pages, but I do like that they added a little more backstory into the book as it is provided with a timeline at the end of the book.
The Great Gatsby is a well written book that takes place in the 1920s. F. Scott Fitzgerald does a great job incorporating many aspects of the 1920s in this book. Throughout the novel the common theme or question is “can money buy you happiness”. I feel that this is a great question that requires a lot of thought. By reading this book it will challenge readers to think about that question. I would highly recommend reading this novel!
The whole book is quite short, but boy is it interesting. It is so weird that you cannot help but not look away. The book is only around 70 pages so it can be read in one sitting. It can be read at a surface level or you can look into the book more symbolically. It is about a man who turns into a bug and has to navigate his new life, it is really good but also I bit sad. Totally worth the read.
The book was fantastic, seeing Levittown in it's earliest years was amazing. I wish there were more pictures of shopping centers around the Levittown area. I loved seeing how much old Levittown houses used to cost and how fast the population in Levittown grew. I am currently about to read the second volume because of how interested I am for this information. A well known musician grew up in Levittown during the 1940s and 50s, but because of the no spoilers, I'd prefer not to reveal his name in this review.
This book was so much fun and was a great spin on Harry Potter. The world that Rowell created was unique and I really enjoyed all the little twists about how the magic in this world worked. The characters were the best part of the book and I’m very happy that there were multiple point of views since it gave a great insight into all of the characters. The absolute best part was the way that it casually told the story of the two main guy characters that were in love. Many times in books a character being gay is the main focus point so it is very refreshing for the love of two boys to be something that is accepted and considered normal. I recommend this book to everyone as it is such a fun read and the last book in the series is coming out this July!
This book very quickly became one of my favorite books I have ever read. Hosseini has a gift for writing characters that are so insanely human and real. I absolutely love that this story is told from the point of views of two women, which can be so rare in literature. The woman are strong and powerful and the story really shows all the burdens women carry, especially in countries such as Afghanistan which was under the control of the Taliban. The main characters, Laila and Mariam develop a relationship that is so heart-warming and it was my favorite thing to read about.
This wonderful book tells the story of Amir as he grows from childhood to adulthood. It is a beautiful story of dealing with our past mistakes and guilt and working to be good again as we right our wrongs. All of the characters are very human and their struggles, both internally and externally, are relatable and real. I love the way that a lot of the plot lines came full circle and it led to a very satisfying ending. Hosseini is able to create a story that will warm everyone’s heart while simultaneously ripping it to pieces and I especially love how the ending and the way that it is someone capable of achieving both of these feelings.
The book features the five main characters from the first book of the sequel The Perfect Score. They all try to tackle their challenge of the year which is to find out why Mrs. Woods and Mrs. Magenta don't speak to each other after finding out that they are related. Over the year they faced new challenges and all try to keep secrets from each other but before you know it things come hurtling their way. I love the book sequel and it also tackles issues they exist in the daily world.
The Outsiders shows what it is like to live in the poor side of a town in Oklahoma. The gang the Greasers show what it truly means to stick together even during tough times. Unfortunately there is some violence that happens in their town. If you do not like violence then you will not like this book. The Greasers usually have conflicts with their opposing gang, the Socs. The Socs live on the rich side of town and are different from the Greasers. This book shows what true friends will do for you, even in extremely tough times.
The Kite Runner is a riveting book that will challenge kids to be kind to others. It also shows that as life goes on people have the ability to change. The plot is very interesting. This book will have you hooked by the first few chapters. The book is very well written and I would highly recommend reading it if you haven’t already as you can learn many lessons from it.
The book is about five kids in sixth grade all with different personalities. But one thing they all have in common is that they all hate and dread the Statewide Assessment Test. Throughout the year you'll see them change especially with their personalities. I really thought the book was heartwarming and funny and I recommend this book for one in middle school.
I recently re-read this book in a more analytical sense rather than simply for enjoyment. It is simply a great book. While it is chock-full of descriptive imagery and themes so it is perfect to break down and analyze for your book club, it is also emotional and has relatable characters that are perfect for a general fun read. I personally love dystopian books, but this one just takes the cake. Collins perfectly describes a fallen utopia with a protagonist that has many compelling layers and relationships that make you want to keep reading.
The novel, "The Kite Runner", is about a boy named Amir and his maturation as he grows up in Afghanistan and afterwards. Throughout his childhood, he experiences many events and was surrounded by many cultural influences and privileges that shaped his well being, even as an adult. When he grew up, he moved on and thought all of that was in his past, but one day something happens that brings him back to his repressed background and upbringing. However, the reader gets to witness how all of these things that had happened to him and those close to him have now impacted him and made him a better man. Watching how Amir's whole dynamic changes because of the circumstances around him make the book an amazing read and captivates you the whole time. (If you are sensitive to traumatic events, I suggest not reading it as it is filled with very realistic imagery of very unsettling events)
This book, my favorite book of all time, talks about a 13 year old kid named Brian. Recently Brian's parents got divorced, which he finds extremely painful. He is visiting his dad in a small plane when the plane crashes, leaving Brian alone in the wilderness, with only a hatchet. The story then walks the narrator through the journey of his survival. This book is a page-turner and once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it back down! This book also has sequels . I recommend this for anyone above 4th grade as their are some things that can be possibly scary to a younger audience, but I guarantee that no one will be dissapointed.
The book is about a troubled 14 year old girl who is sent out of her home into a survivalist camp out in the desert in Utah for eight weeks. I recommend the book for anyone in eighth grade or over. The book made me feel her frustration and anger towards the situation she was in. It was a really heart warming book that touched me deeply.
Pay It Forward is about a young boy who does acts of kindness for people around him in his life that greatly affect him and others.
Restart is about middle schooler Chase , who has amnesia and he tries to regain memories on who he was before and how he has changed now.
Diary of a wimpy kid is a fun paced novel that is about a middle schooler named Greg Heffley and his best friend who try to get through middle school.
Slacker is about a boy named Cameron Boxer and he is on the verge of becoming a professional gamer! Cameron isn't a very hardworking person and not the best at school. He gets into a little trouble with his parents which forces him to get involved at school. I would totally recommend Slacker for those who can possibly relate to Cameron. Gordon Korman even came out with a second Slacker book which I absolutely love and in my opinion is my favorite book of the series.
The giver is a good book so far. I haven’t finished it yet but so far it is good. Jonas gets the job of being a recover of memory. The previous receiver is giving Jonas memories of things Jonas does not have in his community. I highly recommend you read the giver.
Lamb to the slaughter is a very good book. A man named Patrick tells his wife he is leaving her. The wife then, kills her husband with a frozen lamb. She then pretends she went to the store and cam home to him dead. She covers up her story and nobody thought it was her. She is a very clever woman.
This book was great! It is filled with lots of suspense. You never know what comes next! Dan Brown wrote this book perfectly, keeping the reader turning the page, waiting to see what happens next. Robert Langdon is a great character who is amazing at deciphering symbols. I would recommend this to everyone who likes a good suspense and action book.
This book is great for anyone who likes friendship books. Rebecca Stead describes everything very well, including both suspense and humor. On nearly every page, I was either biting my nails or laughing! The book teaches a lesson about the true meaning of friendship and being a team. I would definitely read this again, it is an amazing book written by a great author!
The book was amazing! I like the way Florian uses small and overlooked clues to solve mysteries. It is exciting and keeps me turning the page to see the next tiny clue. James Ponti builds up the suspense and action in a great way while also including many funny parts. The book really is great for people who love mysteries, and I would recommend it to anyone.
I picked this book because I love the author, and I was not disappointed. It was a great read that truly made you feel like you were in the book. It covered a couple of controversial topics but in a beautiful way. As a reader, you start to create relationships with the characters and they feel like they are your own friends and family. Thomas drops you right in the middle of Starr’s (the main character) story but you pick it up quick. I would definitely recommend to a friend.

As the story goes on he is still young but him in the painting becomes old and wrinkly. He commits a murder but no one ever suspects him because they all thought he was a nice and young boy. The book is about a very intelligent 12 year old girl named Charlie Throne who is used by the CIA to help find an equation called Pandora which is hidden somewhere in the world. This equation was created by Albert Einstein to either help Earth or hurt it but he hid it away worried it would fall into the wrong hands. Almost 70 years later, the CIA is still nowhere close with finding this equation and a group called The Furies is very close to finding the equation to destroy millions of innocent people. And now its up to Charlie to help save the world and find this equation before its in the wrong hands. As she is closer to finding clues to the equation itself so are The Furies and another group to get it in their hands for power as Charlie is on the hunt for it even if it means risking her life for it. I really liked the book and the plot of it.
The realistic fiction novel "Number The Stars" by Lois Lowry was about a girl and her family who is trying to help her best friend's family get through the Holocaust. Annemarie and her family are taking in her friend Ellen and if any of the soldiers search their apartment, Ellen's name is Lise which is Annemarie's late older sisters name. Ellen's parents have gone off to a different country to seek protection. After a while, they pack up and Annemarie, Ellen, Kirsti, which is Annemarie's younger sister's name, and their mother leave to go stay at their Uncle Henrik's place. The Nazi soldiers are all over Denmark and you can't leave your home without encountering one of them. At the end of the book, Annemarie has to say goodbye to her best friend without knowing when they will see her again, when Ellen and her parents are sent to Sweden to seek safety with all of the other Jews. Two years later, the war has ended and Annemarie is back home with her family and there are celebrations all over Copenhagen with parades and flags.
This book is the first novel of The Hunger Games Trilogy. The book is written through the eyes of a 16 year old girl. There is adventure, action, sorrow and love. Everything you are looking for in one book, it was a great read.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest offers an extremely interesting perspective on the human condition. The power struggle between the two characters with the patients acting as the side character was very unique. Additionally, the dialogue on mental illness and masculinity was surprising, especially for the time period. Watching the events slowly unfold and seeing each aspect and quirk of the patients was amazing. I can't recommend this novel enough, everything from the perspective in which the story is told, to the flaws of each patient and the abuse from the ward is something I've never seen before and completely caught me off guard when I first read it.
The book is about a married couple who have an estranged relationship. The wife goes missing and the husband becomes the prime suspect. There’s evidence on the husband but he knows he didn’t commit a crime. The towns people have a hard time of believing him.
The fantasy genre ties into ancient Greek mythology to make an exciting story. Each chapter has a plot twist to look forward to. To fully understand the book, you have to know about the Greek gods. Even kids who don't like to read will make you want to read the entire series. I recommend this novel to kids in 6th and 7th grade.
This novel was a combination of fantasy and adventure fiction. The characters bring you along with them on their journey. This would interest preteens from 10 to 13 years old. The magical plot line was exciting and anticipating. There were many plot twist throughout the book that made me refuse to put the book down. I highly recommend this novel for a boost of energy.
The beginning of the story was great. I have few books that really put in next to the characters like the book does. This is a book that I think teens will love. Would consider.
The book in it of itself has great plot. The beginning is my favorite part. The way the author uses imagery is brilliant. I love books who tell stories about overcoming great adversity. This is 100% a book a would consider to readers that have the same interests as me.
The Lost Symbol is a mystery involving Robert Langdon, a Harvard symbologist, and the mysterious Freemasons and the legend of an important object. Through the shocking events, Langdon is forced to solve the mystery of the object, as we the reader learn more about the Freemasons in a thriller novel. A great book about puzzles and history beyond the norm. I would recommend it as a fun read. Brown continues his signature style and does it very well.
This book is a perfect dive into the mind of a gay 16 year old living in a poor area of New York City. It tells of his story and struggles with realizing he is gay, depression, self harm, and the heartbreak of young people. Silvera creates a beautiful character that the reader gets to see grow and begin to accept his true self. It is heartwarming as well as heartbreaking and the many twists and turns kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat for the whole book. I highly recommend this book as well as the rest of Silvera’s books.
Dorian Gray is a book that takes place in the 1800s in London. Dorian Gray is a young gentlemen, and in the beginning of the book, he is getting painted by Basil, his friend, for a painting. Lord Henry then introduces himself to Dorian and they became good friends. Lord Henry talks lots of nonsense and influences Dorian in many bad ways. Dorian wants to have youth and beauty for eternity and he gets it. The painting would represent Dorian's soul and as the story goes on it changes the picture of him to very old and scary.
I’d been meaning to read this book for a while and when I finally got around to it, I just couldn’t put it down. It has the perfect amount of action, drama, and romance. The writing is amazing you can picture everything clearly and the relationships between the characters keeps pulling you in. I would totally recommend this book, especially to someone who needed to think about someone else’s family drama for a while.

Andy's wife, Laurie wants to help him out by inviting him over to their house to help him out. Later that evening, the police raids Andy's house and arrests the homeless man. They said he has been charged with murder. Andy will be his lawyer and prove his innocence.
I loved the book! It was full of adventure, and humor at the same time. The book is very well written, with amazing descriptions of the characters, settings etc. There are mysteries to be solved, and the problems from the first book lead to the second, all the way to the seventh book. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure, romance, and humor.

The book PROJEKT 1065 is about a boy named Michael who is a spy for the Americans. Michael's job was to find hidden intel with his parents about the Soviet Union. Overall things go bad and his parents are forced to leave Michael behind with the soviet soldiers to find secret intel. This book is filled with adventure and action and I really recommend this book to people who like war and adventure.
I really enjoyed the book. It had action, adventure, and a lot more. The book is about a boy who goes to a juvenile detention camp where you dig holes to build character. I would definitely recommend this and there is also a movie you can watch afterwards. I would give this book 7 out of 10.
It's a book about the children of the Greek/Roman gods, two leaders of camps have swapped places and need to have peace to defeat Gaia the Goddess of the earth whom the Gods cannot defeat, so they need their children to help them in this quest, but that's not the worst of their problems they must face Gaia herself but it's amazing.
Born a Crime follows the life of comedian and host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah. His biography explains his life while living under apartheid, and the challenges that he faced in his everyday life. Despite the fact his life was very difficult since he was "illegal", he was able to turn these childhood experiences into something more humorous. While his biography was mostly humorous, it definitely had its moments that were more serious especially as he got older. It's definitely one of my favorite biographies that I have read, as it can be tied back into todays issues because of the fact that he went through this recently unlike other biographies and autobiographies that take place over 50 years ago.
This novel tells a great story of brothers. It tells a story of brothers in the 50s who live through a tough adolescence. And, this book showed a great story of division. It showed how bad things can get when you divide based on social status. It is learned throughout the story that things can become awful if you divide into enemies, especially for shallow reasons. Also, we learn that doing the right thing can sometimes cost a price.
The book gave a good message that humanity should strive towards. It can help with character building in real life. It gives out an idea on how to improve everyday in society. Also, it pushed the idea that change started with children. It showed that adults think too logically, but kids think hopefully.
I think this novel is one of my new favorites. It follows a nameless man and son who are embarked on a dangerous and gruesome journey through a post-apocalyptic world where humans have turned all types of evils. I love the way Cormac McCarthy showed glimpses of the man's peaceful past and paired them with moments of pure evil and carnage. He created a world where normal life was a thing of the past, and it felt very real. The images he created were the stuff of nightmares, but he possesses a way of writing that truly creates a real sense of unease. The book drew some inspiration from "Darkness" by Lord Byron as well as a number of religious parallels, which were all done quite magnificently in my opinion. If you enjoy captivating dark post-apocalyptic novels, I definitely recommend this book.
The book, Lord of the Flies, is a head turning book with such a haunting, tragic, and deep hidden meaning all the characters and events that take place. This book is a classic tale of survival and the concepts are so different and fantastic. Golding's novel is a beautiful work of art. The imagery he uses to describe the island paints a picture like no other that wouldn't be forgotten.
I had initially expected Slaughterhouse-Five to be boring and mundane like most other books I had read for school; however, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book was actually rather captivating! From start to finish, it feels like a journey that the reader embarks on along with the protagonist, Billy Pilgrim. Billy Pilgrim comes "unstuck in time" as a result of a supposed encounter with an alien race known as the Tralfamadorians. The unorthodox experiences of Billy Pilgrim as he traverses through life all contribute to a refreshing take on a character who is viewed as insane by those around him, but one who perceives life in an entirely new way. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in a novel incorporating aspects of both science-fiction and history!
Darkness. Companionship. Survival. These are all themes conveyed in Cormac McCarthy's greatest novel: The Road. Follow a boy and his father in post-apocalyptic America as they make their way down south. McCarthy's vivid imagery and description hooks readers into the ash-ridden landscape of their new reality. The Road leaves readers constantly wondering will this poor boy and his father find enough resources throughout their journey to service. Through their journey down the road, the man and his son will face many moral choices and encounters with others that will question their core values as "the good guys" and leave the readers with new realizations about the human condition and ultimately wondering, will they survive?
This is a book about the journey of a man and his son after an apocalypse decimated the world's population. There are a majority of "bad guys" in the world, that do horrible things tot the people who are left. Throughout the book, you see them struggle, mentally and physically, see them bond and also see them overcome many challenges as they make their way to their destination. There is also a lot of meaning to this book that you really have to dig and analyze for, making it all the more interesting! You begin to get attached to the man and the boy, and their story is so captivating and suspenseful. You never know what going to happen on their travels.
This book is about how racial issues that occurred and how Jem broke his arm. Scout and Jem's father, Atticus, was a lawyer for a black man. The man was falsely accused of rape and all of the supporting evidence from the victim didn't add up. Although the victim's story was confusing, the man still got sentenced. This book informs you about the corrupt justice system for the black community and that you should treat everyone with equality and respect.
This book is about two boys who were born were raised together, but one was more wealthy than the other. Amir was the wealthy boy and Hassan was Amir's servant. The book starts in the present time then goes in the past. It is a story about how Amir lived his life full of regret because of his mistreatment towards Hassan. Amir goes back to Afghanistan and learns about what happened to Hassan and what Amir can do to make things right for Hassan.
The book is taken place during The Salem Witch Trials. Back then, people were extremely terrified for their lives about witch craft. Many would falsely accuse others without any proof. People who were accused lied and admitted to witch craft to avoid being publicly executed. This book shows you mob mentality and has character development.
The Road is a post apocalyptic novel about a man and his son’s journey through a desolate wasteland he once called home. Everything from the subtle yet explicit detail to the slow character development develops McCarthy’s perception of the human condition and eatery facet of the human race’s innate behavior. The enigmatic past and characters creates an immense sense of uncertainty that never leaves. Even after learning more about the world, I was still left with questions, allowing me to interpret each detail how I saw fit. Each time you read this novel it is certain that you will notice another detail that is integral to the complex plot, possibly changing how you see the novel in its entirety. The Road is a masterpiece of fiction that deserves multiple reads in order to comprehend every aspect.
This dystopian series does an amazing job of capturing the essence of such familiar characters and twisting their stories into something entirely new. The warped and dark depictions of classic fairytales that so many people have come to know and love throughout the years makes the series incredibly enticing. Every book was hard to put down, and each time I finished one, I found myself counting down the seconds until I could get my hands on the next one. The characters are relatable and lovable, and the plot is interesting and encapsulating. This series is truly immersive and incredible, and I highly recommend reading it if you are interested in twisted fairytales.
The book follows the journey of the protagonist, Stephen Dedalus, as he experiences the complex world around him and transforms from a unique child to an articulate adult. Joyce's superb writing and style is evident throughout the book. The apt use of motifs, the portrayal of the ways Stephen perceives the world around him throughout his childhood and adolescence, and the subtle yet gradual critique of politics and religion combine to make this work a literary masterpiece. The only criticism I have is with some of the many side characters of the story, since it is slightly difficult at times to keep up with them, but it doesn't take away from the reading experience. It is a transformative work, and is rightfully praised as one of the greatest books in literature. The book is a must-read for any fans or scholars of literature or anyone who wants to read an amazing coming-of-age story.
The Portrait of Dorian Grey is one of now all time favorite novels. It revolves around this young man called Dorian Gray who is so self absorbed in his looks. He ends up selling his soul to the devil to stay forever young. This book shows the philosophical side of pride. What pride and greed can turn you into through showing you the life of Dorian Grey. This book is also filled with some great side characters like Lord Henry and Basil. This book it just so amazing!
This book was a book before its time. The author Kate Chopin wrote this book in the late 1800s about a women longing to leave her husband. This story went against the social norms with a woman wanted to leave her life, her kids, her religion, and everything that had been choices forced on to her to start something new with some she really loved. This book holds many symbols and motifs such as birds, religion, art, and water. This book is also accompanied with such detailed imagery of greenery. This book is a gorgeous masterpiece.
This book was at first quite tedious to get through. Although at points I started to get annoyed by the choices the author made when I reread it and put the time I needed to understand it. I found this book to be one of the best I read. Through the use of motifs of birds, water, and color exploring what they meant had me hooked. Joyce's ideas on religion also truly hit home. It's an amazing coming of age story that takes place in Ireland. It faces topics that are even talked about today, like religion and finding yourself. All in all a very amazing book.
The book is about a boy named Dorian with unimaginable beauty. He offers to help his friend, who is a painter, by being his muse. While helping, he meets another man. Dorian wishes for his beauty to never fade, that his aging would be transferred into the painting his friend was working on. These 2 men act as the devil and angel on Dorian's shoulder as he gets older and changes.
One of the best nonfiction books I have ever read! Now, don't let the word "non-fiction" deter you from reading this book. I can assure it that it doesn't sound like non-fiction at all! The book reads exactly like a horror novel. Sometimes when I was reading, I would have to double check certain facts because I really couldn't believe what I was seeing. Preston does an excellent job at scaring his readers through how detailed his writing is. I made the mistake of eating while reading this book and was forced to take a break because my ravioli suddenly reminded me of the melted insides of the Ebola patients. The Hot Zone is a non-fiction thriller account of the events revolving around the Ebola outbreaks. It's super gruesome, gory and downright scary. If you're interested in science this would be a great read for you! This book totally classifies as a horror for me since there isn't anything scarier then reading about something that actually happened. The fear factor is especially heightened because the Ebola virus had the potential to become a massive pandemic and we're currently experiencing one. Please read this- you totally won't regret it!
I adore this book! I initially read it as a summer assignment in seventh grade and thought it would totally stink. But as I skimmed along the first pages I realized I was terribly mistaken. The story follows Sara Smolinsky, who is the youngest daughter of an Orthodox rabbi. It follows through her experience living in the slums and watching her sisters get married off to men they didn't love. The story is just so heartwarming- you see Sara fight against all the obstacles, the biggest being her father, to make her life happier. It's an excellent story and I am constantly re-reading it!
This book follows "two" characters on a road trip to visit one of their parents. It starts off in a really good way- and does a good job at keeping you interested but towards the middle it's a bit dull. Later on in the book, things start to get super confusing but by the end everything is explained. This book is the literal representation of looking at a gift and thinking you know what it is; but it turns out, that you really weren't. It's a really cool surprise and a very light read since it only has 210 pages. This book is pretty unnerving and really confusing so it's perfect for that whole October/scary reads vibe. There is even a Netflix adaptation of this movie which captures the whole vibe of the book very well.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a touching story about a nine year old boy, Oskar, who lost his father on 9/11. It takes place a year later when he discovers a key in a vase that belonged to his father. The book is told from Oskar’s perspective which offers a unique view of the world and the people in it. The story is both heartbreaking and heartwarming as Oskar works through his grief and learns to move on. It is a beautifully written story that keeps you captivated until the very last page.
This book is now one of my favorite books of all time! It revolves around a missing persons case that's been closed for quite a long time now. The person missing is this member of this really wealthy family in Sweden, Harriet Vanger. So what ends up happening is that her granduncle hires out this investigate journalist, Mikael Blomkvist who has to solve this super mystery. Later on in the book we meet our second main character, Lisbeth Salander, who is this super genius with computers. She also happens to be the "girl with the dragon tattoo" and she works with Mikael to solve this case. The book is filled to the brim with suspense, action and keeps you leaning on the edge of whatever you're sitting on. The best part would have to be the chapters right before the ending of the book since Larsson throws a HUGE plot twist that hits you out of nowhere. The book also takes place in Sweden which is really cool. Just a disclaimer though, this book is really hard to read at times, especially towards the middle because it does have themes of abuse. If you're a fan of mystery, suspense and action than you'll absolutely appreciate this book. It's also the first book in the series, and at the moment I'm reading the second book and it's really good. So if you love reading series then that is also another bonus!
Everyone knows Lovecraft. Everyone knows that his stories are scary. This book encapsulates some of his very known works and some overshadowed ones. They are all so awesome! This book is just a collection of his stories and I've been reading at least two of them before bed and let me tell you, it's been a mistake. Some of these are really good at disorienting you and disturbing you whilst others are sometimes kind of boring and completely focused on science fiction. The reason this book lost two points would have to be mainly cause I found some stories to just go on a bit too long- and cause those specific stories are were just boring. All of them managed to take me back in time and explore different areas as well. My favorite story would have to be "The Music of Erich Zann" it's just so disturbing and creepy. If you're looking for more sophisticated horror then this is totally what I would recommend.
If you love thrillers with crazy antagonists then Misery is the novel for you! Stephen King does an excellent job at building up this house that's been snowed in where you just feel as though you're stuck with the madwoman; Annie Wilkes. The main character Paul Sheldon is this author of the fictional Misery Chastain series which Annie Wilkes practically worships. So when she finds him, injured, and in need of help she takes him in and then keeps him trapped in her house. The book keeps you on your toes the entire time and just when things start to get a little normal, King hits you with this crazy plot twist or throws something horrible at poor Paul Sheldon. There is even a movie based on this book that I would totally recommend after you've read this. It does a great job of putting a picture to the faces in the book- and the actress that plays Annie Wilkes just gives you goosebumps. This book is a must-read for anyone that's interested in the horror genre or hasn't read any of King's work yet. This book was actually my first King book and has left me with a huge appreciation for his writing.
The Book Thief is a book about a young orphan girl, Liesel, who arrives at the house of her foster parents house, Hans and Rosa. They were in Germany during the Holocaust. When Hans, learns that Liesel cannot read, he teaches the child the wonders of the written language. Liesel grows to love books, even rescuing one from a Nazi bonfire. Their family will soon shelter a Jewish boy whose father saved Han's life.
I really enjoyed this book because of how much gore was in it. The book had a lot of horror aspects in it. The three short story's had lots of action and terrifying tales witch was very fun to read. And the story's are pretty short so you wont get bored. If you like horror and plot twists definitely read this book.
I liked this book because it was something new and unique. I really enjoyed the message that anybody can make a difference in somebody's life. Paying it forward starts off small but them affects many peoples lives. I felt it was a very positive message. It would be great to do this in real life. I would recommend this book to my friends to read.
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury takes place in a futuristic world where almost all books are banned in order to prevent offensive content from being published and propagated. The only problem is that anyone can say he/she Is offended by anything which leads to the censorship and destruction of virtually all printed materials. This novel follows Guy Montag, a fireman who instead of putting out fires, is responsible for causing fires. His sole job is to burn books that have been discovered. Montag is complacent to this lifestyle until day, what should have been a typical assignment leaves him so shaken that he is forced to question the job that he holds. Even though this novel was written so long, its themes of the overuse of technology, restrictions on free speech and inability to express one's perspective for fear of being "canceled," are all relevant social concerns today.
1984 by George Orwell is a dystopian read set in a totalitarian nation called Oceania. The novel explores futuristic themes of government surveillance and inescapability of mass media control. Published in 1949, this novel represents the predictions that the author, Orwell had for the distant future. Additionally, in this dystopian world, the government known as The Party controls virtually every part of its citizens' lives from their history to what they are allowed to think and believe. The Party is headed by the someone named "Big Brother" who is constantly watching and monitoring the movements of Oceania's inhabitants through cameras and TV screens. This novel follows the life of Winston Smith, a member of The Party, who grows dissatisfied with his life and is forced to confront everything he was told to believe.
This book was amazing because it was about a boy who wanted to change the world. Trevor is only 12 years old. He decided to do an extra credit project about changing the world. His idea was to pay it forward, which means to help someone in need or as a kindness. I would definitely recommend this book to all people.
Fahrenheit 451 is a book about the future of American society. Books are outlawed and television and technology dominates. There are jobs as a "firemen" and they burn any books they find. The main character is a firemen but finds out the truth. He decided to quit his job to save the books and knowledge.
1984 is a book about dystopian novel. It talks about a party controlling over society and they control history. If you try to oppose the Party you will be hunted down and captured. You will be brainwashed to become part of the Party again. Once your brainwashed, you will be killed by the Party at a random time in your life.
I liked this book because it made me feel a lot of different emotions. This is the sequel to The Wild Robot. It is about a robot named Roz who is not like all the other robots. Roz has a family and lots of friends. In this book, she has many adventures trying to get back to them. I would definitely recommend this book.
I am usually not the biggest fan of biographies and life stories but this book was special because of the messages that were embedded within it. This book was about Trevor Noah's childhood in South Africa as a mixed race child and how he grew up as an "illegal child". The way in which Noah was able to craft his stories into humorous but informative chapters throughout the book was especially remarkable. It was also fascinating that Noah was able to turn some troubling childhood experiences into stories with lessons that kids could learn from. I definitely recommend that people read it because it also helps to put our lives into perspective and may help some realize how lucky they really are to live the life that they do.
Magnus chase i Is a homeless kid with two friends: Blitz and Hearth. He has been homeless for three years ever since his mom died to 2 wolves. Educated by Tara Westover is a memoir in which she narrates her difficult but inspiring journey in pursuing knowledge. Growing up in a dysfunctional and survivalist family in Idaho, Westover was only exposed to the narrow worldviews of her anti-establishment, fanatical father. Her family denied her a formal education, ignored and minimized the abuse she received from a older brother and forced her work on a dangerous junkyard as a child. Tara Westover's childhood was so isolated from the rest of the world that her early life was distorted by the radical beliefs of her father who distrusted modern medicine, schooling and the government. Throughout this book, Westover details the adversities she overcame, both physically and emotionally, on her quest to gain her own understanding of the world without being overly reliant on others' narratives. The most fascinating part of this book is how this once-seventeen year old girl who did not know basic math went on to achieve new heights and attend elite colleges such as Harvard and Cambridge. I loved his book and would recommend it anyone!
The Good Earth is a very in depth book on certain aspects of Chinese culture in the early 19th century. It displays how even individuals from simple beginnings can change from money's influence. The book may seem a bit boring at first for some readers, but as the plot goes on they will grow fond of some memorable characters. The values of the book may seem strange to some readers, but there are some aspects of the eastern culture that are similar to our values here in America. I highly suggest this book to those who want to read a somewhat challenging book and gain insight on some aspects of life in general.
This book is a must- read book. It's a book that would leave you thinking with satisfaction yet tears, and a strong desire to read the next book of the series immediately. You want to know what happens to Celaena Sardothien, the powerful protagonist of the story. The story is mainly about her, who is an assassin working for her fox-like boss until her feelings for her colleague Sam turns from cold to hot, just as her feelings for her boss turns from cold to colder. She and Sam decides to run away from this dangerously cunning master with their lives on stake. This book will lift you high up to the sky, and then it would suddenly drop you down to the bottom.
Holding Up The Universe is an astronomically amazing novel that is extremely relatable and realistic despite being a fiction book. In this novel, Jack and Libby are characters who come from opposite sides of the spectrum when talking about their backgrounds and the stereotypes they face. The reason why I loved this book is because of how inspiring the book’s message is and because of how hopeful it made me feel. This too, like any of Jennifer Niven’s book will really make you think and wonder even with its lighthearted and sometimes dark humor. I recommend this book for everybody but especially for teens who like funny romance novels!
This fiction novel is a New York Times bestseller that tells the story of Theodore Finch and Violet Markey, two characters who seem to have nothing in common except for the school they attend. However, after a fateful encounter at the bell tower, they begin to unpack their fears and traumas in an emotional journey with one another that will leave you in awe. One thing i really liked about this book is that it talks about mental health as well as mental illnesses in a different way that really made me feel emotionally attached to the book and its characters. Overall, this story will bring you on an emotional roller coaster that you’ll never forget. So if you ever decide to give this book a read, buckle up and enjoy the ride!
𝘎𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘋𝘢𝘺 is a non-fiction book that follows the life of graduate student Sudhir Venkatesh, who befriends a gang leader while studying urban poverty in the city of Chicago. Because this book takes place in the late '80s and spills over into the early '90s, it was fascinating to read all of the changes that happened to the U.S. from a different perspective. But the parts that captivated me the most were the unbelievable stories and relationships throughout the book because of how crazy they are! Every chapter had me on the edge of my seat wanting more and more. I also loved how the author made the book so interesting to read even as a non-fiction book! I highly suggest this novel for young adults who are in high school as it gives insight into many important issues in society as well as how different groups of people struggle to deal with them.
Gone is a sci-fi book. In a blink of an eye, everyone except teens disappear. Also, there are no phones and internet. Everyone is trying to survive and there are groups formed. Teens are also developing powers that are deadly and dangerous. As soon as you hit your 15th birthday, you disappear like everyone else.
This book was absolutely amazing! It's all of my favorite genres wrapped up in one book. It's got a little bit for everyone. It has a "figurative'" ghost, romance, and a bunch of mystery. This is a definite classic but it feels like a modern novel. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to get into reading the classics.
In the fifth book of heroes of Olympus, the characters Jason, Piper, Annabeth, Percy, Leo, Hazel, and Frank have decided they need to find out what Gaea (the earth mother) has planned. In the previous book, she was awakened as the heroes discovered and removed the Athena Parthenos from Arachne’s lair. Because of something tragic in the last book, Percy and Annabeth must recover for a short time. This book and book series I really enjoyed! It was great and there were lots of cliffhangers and so many great characters! There was so much to talk about with my friend who was one book ahead of me when we read them!
Freak The Mighty was an exhilarating book. It was full of fun and scary adventures that two boys, Kevin and Max take together. This book will have you feeling a roller coaster of emotions. It is great for young adults because the author writes the book from the point of view of a teen, and many teens can relate to things that happen in the story. Give it a chance, I am sure you will love it!
This is the perfect book for anyone that loved Aladdin. Now, I wouldn’t read it just to get that one story since you’d be missing out on the other amazing tales. It manages to push you back in time and immerse you in a land where genies and djinns roamed freely and almost everyone was in some type of magical trouble. It also gives you a microscopic insight into the history of the setting but overall it’s just an easy read. If I can use three words to describe it they would be: captivating, dramatic, and whimsical. Go read it!
All I can say is “wow”. This book blew me away. I decided to read it because a member of a band I like said it was his favorite book, and so my interest was piqued. But as I read past the first chapter I decided that it was actually pretty good. Just a disclaimer, this is a very dark and grotesque book- but still very interesting. It revolves around this Parisian man who is gifted with a super sense of smell. I’m not talking about “heightened” or “sensitive”, I mean “SUPER”. He can smell everything to the point that it’s overwhelming. So he puts his talent to use and becomes a perfumer- and because of how good he is, he becomes popular very quickly. Now, this is where things get dark. He catches a whiff of something “irresistible” one day and chases the scent down, to like the ends of the Earth. It turns out to be a woman and so, he murderers her to preserve her scent. That’s the point where the book goes downhill. The man goes on a killing spree to find this elusive smell. The writing style of this book is fairly easy to understand and is pretty captivating. It also does an amazing job of hurling you into 18th century Paris. I would recommend this book for older teens and well, an older audience, mainly because of how dark the book can get. But- overall I would say it is an amazing experience and something you should definitely pick up if you’re a fan of historical fiction and crime!
