Another fantastic half term of exciting learning in Puffins to start a new year!
In English we have been reading 'The Firework Maker's Daughter'. We began our immersion into this fabulous story by watching the play at the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon. It was an exciting experience for us all and we greatly enjoyed watching the story come alive on stage. We have written a character description of our own heroic character and have created our own versions of the story. A very inspiring book to start 2026!
In Maths we have focused on measurement, learning about length, mass, volume and capacity. We have used metre rulers, measuring jugs and scales to help us with our learning.
Our History lessons have caused a great deal of interest and excitement among the children of Puffins. We have spent the half term learning about the Egyptians. We have greatly enjoyed finding out about this fascinating group of people. We have extended our understanding of how sources and artefacts give us more knowledge of a civilisation and have been fascinated to find out how to write hieroglyphics and to find out about the gods, the Nile and mummification. Our learning finished in an exciting way with mummifying a tomato! We are looking forward to coming back after half term to see what has happened to our mummies!
In Science we have found out more about our bodies and how they work. We've looked at our skeletons and how our muscles work. We enjoyed creating moving hands to show the job our muscles do in our hands.
Computing lessons have been very exciting this half term as we have used the Lego Spike boxes to create and code our own moving lego models.
We greatly enjoyed Numbers Day, dressing up as 'the number that must not be named' as well as being able to wear our football kits. We had fun getting outside and doing some mathematical activities, including a tally chart of the vehicles on the A24. We were amazed at the number of cars that went past in about 10 minutes.
We have also had a few sessions of Forest School this half term. We had a fantastic time in the snow just after Christmas, as well as being involved in some birdwatching and marshmallow roasting.
Just a reminder that Maths and English homework is on Century every week. It is very important to get the children used to doing homework as they will be doing alot more as they move up the school. Please also encourage the children to read and practise their spellings daily and this helps greatly in their English lessons.
