"Shawley is a school where children are engaged, collaborate and THRIVE"

This week we welcomed a review team to school for our first Challenge Partner's Review. The team was made up of a Lead Reviewer, in our case also a trained Ofsted inspector, and two other reviewers who hold Senior Leadership positions in other schools. We spent three days sharing our school improvement journey, looking at our vision, and exploring the teaching, learning, and behaviour across the school.

Please find below some of the comments that were made by the team during the visit. We are really pleased to share these comments with you.

" The behaviour of the children is something to be proud of. They have strong relationships with the adults and other children and because of this they have the confidence to make mistakes and learn from them."

" There are high levels of learning and engagement in all classes and the use of technology can be seen throughout to enhance teaching and learning."

"The children are polite, well mannered, and supportive of each other. They have the skills to problem-solve and demonstrate good subject knowledge. "

" The curriculum is well designed to meet the needs of the community whilst also raising aspirations. Teachers' subject knowledge is strong and consequently, children's knowledge and skills will stand them in a good position for the future."

"The change in this school has been rapid and you should all be exceptionally proud. "

" The children at Shawley have access to a wide variety of opportunities across all areas of the curriculum."

It was a great review and we are extremely proud of our children & staff.

PhysiFun Festival

This week some of our Year 3/4 children took part in a PhysiFun festival at school. It was wonderful to welcome other schools to the event and to see how proud all of the children were of their achievements.

A big thank you to our Pupil Leadership team for all your support in running the festival. You were a credit to the school.

Year 3 Sleep Over

On Thursday afternoon Year 3 started their introduction to school residentials with a sleep over event.

First, they spent the afternoon going on a trip to Epsom Downs for team games. Next, they made their own pizzas, took part in team games on the field, watched a movie with snacks, and settled down for a hot chocolate before bed.

In the morning they started the day by reading for pleasure in the library, followed by a tasty breakfast. A big thank you to the fundraiser for funding lots of new high-quality books!

It was great to see the collaboration between the children whilst setting up and putting away their beds and also how understanding they all were when supporting their peers who were a little homesick. They were impeccably behaved and we are very proud of them all.

A big thank you to all of the teachers who gave up their time to make this happen, we do really appreciate it.

Year 3/4 Roman Day

Today year 3/4 welcomed a visitor from @HistoricWksps. They spent the day taking part in a variety of fun and engaging sessions exploring life in Roman times. Check out the photos below of the children acting out Roman battles and exploring Roman artefacts and games. The children had a chance to recall their previous knowledge and also make new links in learning. What a great day!

Science Day

A group of Year 5 children were invited to an exciting science day at Epsom Primary today. They met a variety of friendly creatures and learned all about evolution. The children demonstrated bravery when handling lots of different creatures.

Well done to you all!

Panathlon at Shawley

Today we welcomed schools from across the other LEO academy schools for an afternoon of exciting, engaging and inclusive sports. The children were enthusiastic, resilient and welcoming.

A big well done to all involved, it looked like lots of fun!

Hot Weather

With the current hot weather being intermittent, can we please ask that all parents/carers provide each child with a water bottle and sun hat to have in school every day.

In addition to this, please also apply sun cream before school if the weather is planned to be sunny.

If you know your child burns easily, please ensure you send the suncream to school and also let the teacher know, so that we can support your child to reapply it themselves before lunch.

We appreciate your support with this.

Staff Spotlight

Each week get to know one of our Shawley Staff Members a little bit more...

Meet Mrs Evans

A little bit about me: I have been teaching for nearly 16 years and cover PPA for years 3 / 4 and 5 / 6 at Shawley. It’s lovely being able to teach both phases. I live with my husband, four daughters and our dog, Bruno.

My Favourites

Hobbies - I love spending time with my family going on holiday, going for long dog walks that end with a nice meal somewhere. I also really enjoy reading and making a conscious effort to make more time for it.

Food - My favourite foods include anything Italian and I love a cheeky chocolate treat in the evenings!

Drink - A really hot and strong cup of tea would have to be my first choice of drink.

Colour - It would have to be black and purple.

Animal - I think dogs are brilliant but would also choose a lion as they are so incredibly strong and powerful.

Books - I always find enjoyment reading anything by Michael Morpurgo but since joining Shawley, I have been introduced to the author Ross Welford. His books are filled with gripping adventure as well as humour.

Shawley Fundraisers

Shawley's school lottery has been set up specifically to raise money and make a difference for our children! It's a fantastic way to bring parents, carers, staff and the wider community together, in partnership with our school, and at the same time give something back. We hope to raise funds that can support and enrich the education of our children - we aim to provide extra resources for the children, improve the school environment as well as run extracurricular activities such as music, art and sport.

Join today! Click here to access the Your School Lottery website to learn more about how it works and how to join.

Your support is greatly appreciated and we wish you good luck!
