Sports Day

It was great to welcome all our families to sports day this year and we were so lucky with the weather!

We were very impressed by all the children. They demonstrated great teamwork, respect for each other, resilience and enthusiasm. It was also great to see some of their amazing talents.

Our Sports Leaders were superb throughout the day and a big thank you to Mr Warner and Miss Barrett for a great afternoon.

A big well done also to all the parents/carers who took part in the parent and carer race. They were all close races and the children loved it!

What a great day!

And the winning team is...........RED!

Kooth Transition Workshops for Year 6

This week Year 6 took part in the Kooth Transition workshops

The workshop discussed all of the changes that our pupils will be facing and gave them strategies and ways to cope. They discussed emotions that are connected with the move to secondary school, looked at what stress and anxiety are, thought about ways to be positive and build resilience, and lots more. A big thank you to Kooth for these sessions.

Do take a look at their support site here for more information on how they can help.

Writing to be proud of

For the rest of the term, I am aiming to fill the display board in my office with examples of 'Writing to be proud of'. The children are encouraged to bring along writing they are proud of, share it with me and it then watch as it features on my special board. Children will also be given one of the Headteacher Gold Awards.

I have already had two entries, one from Hamish in Year 1 who wrote a wonderful description of his alien. He was extremely creative and worked hard to remember the elements from his writing checklist. The second one was from Oliver in Sea Turtles. Oliver developed his own riddle with the purpose to entertain. From his first draft, he then set about finding ways to improve it, demonstrating such determination and then finally he published his own work.

We are extremely proud of you both!

Celebrating Home Learning

Reading for Pleasure- The Power of a Great Book

As you will know from previous newsletters and workshops, reading has been a big focus for us at Shawley. Not only teaching the skill of reading to enable children to read with fluency but also trying to support our children to develop a love of reading.

Today, our Head Girl Sophia in Year 6 shared a poem with me, that she had written at home, which explores the power of reading a book. I was blown away and could not wait to share it with you all.

Please click here for a link to Sophia reading her poem aloud.

The Battle of Waterloo

It always makes us extremely proud when children come to school and are keen to share their home learning with us. This week Kian shared his own research project into the Battle of Waterloo. Kian has spent a long time finding out about this significant event in history and enjoyed sharing it with his class.

Kian doing this was even more special when we realised it was because a teacher had mentioned they would like to find out more about it. Great work Kian, we are blown away by the effort you have put in.

Achievements out of school

Football Success

It was lovely to hear from Ella last week about how her football team 'Beecholme Belles' got to the final in their football tournament. Ella was very proud of their achievement and shared her trophy and medal with us. Great work Ella.

Success in Swimming

Lara really enjoys taking part in competitive swimming and it was wonderful to see all of her achievements when she shared them in school this week.

Lara won the under 12 trophy for scoring the highest points in her age group. She also won 8 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals in the age 10/11 group category in her club championships competition.

In addition to this, she also gained 3 more trophies for coming 1st place in 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke & 100 individual medley.

Wow Lara, you need your own trophy cabinet! A big well done!

Doodle

Home Learning Reminder

Can we please remind parents/carers of the importance of engaging with Doodle as part of home learning. We have recently noticed a dip in the number of children who are in the green zone.

We expect all children to access the Doodle Maths and Doodle Spell platforms daily. The intelligent algorithm powering these apps learns what your child’s strengths and weaknesses are and builds a personalised work programme tailored around them.

Ten minutes a day is proven to help children make three months of progress in just one month! In addition, children also have access to the Doodle English activities should they want to do them. Top Classes and Individual Doodlers are celebrated in the weekly newsletter. You can access your child’s progress in Doodle through the Parent account.

Reminder of how to set up your parent account

To set up your Parent account, follow these instructions:

  • Ask your child to log in to one of the Doodle apps.

  • In the app, tap on Grown Ups and follow the instructions to link yourself to your child’s account and set up your username and password.

  • Log in to parents.doodlelearning.com with your Grown Ups username and password to see how your child is progressing or download the DoodleConnect app (available on iOs and Android).

Feedback - Through the teacher portal, children’s effort and understanding will be monitored regularly.

If you feel the work your child is doing is not pitched at the right level please let the teacher know as they can issue a new baseline test. It is vital that children complete these independently.

We look forward to seeing engagement levels rising back to last term.

It's a fantastic way to bring parents, carers, staff and the wider community together, in partnership with our school, and at the same time give something back. We hope to raise funds that can support and enrich the education of our children - we aim to provide extra resources for the children, improve the school environment as well as run extracurricular activities such as music, art and sport.

Join today! Click here to access the Your School Lottery website to learn more about how it works and how to join.

Your support is greatly appreciated and we wish you good luck!
