Welcome back after half term! We can't believe we are already half way through the year and that the children are now edging ever closer to being in Year 6!
We have had an enjoyable week this week and have already dived into all of our new curriculum topics:
In English, we have been revising a lot of grammar this week, from different tenses, to different words types, different types of punctuation and different clauses in sentences. There has been a lot to revise, but the children have enjoyed listening to MC Grammar to remind us of all of these important aspects of English!
As Mathematicians, we have started a new topic, looking at decimals. This week, we have been representing decimal numbers using place value counters and Base 10 diennes. We have used polypad to help us with this. We have also been comparing decimals, to see which numbers are greater, and which are smaller. All of Year 5 have already started making links between decimals and the fractions we were looking at last half term.
As Scientists we have started our new topic of 'Life Cycles'. This week we looked at the life cycles of plants and we have taken a cutting of mint to see if it will grow a new plant. We will make observations every week and measure how it's roots have grown.
In Geography we started our new topic, working towards answering the question: 'Why are Oceans important?' We practised our map skills, identifying different countries on a map and then plotted trade routes from Australia.
In our new DT topic, we are going to be looking at bridges and how different shapes are used to reinforce their strength and ability to withhold different weights. This week we made Beam Bridges, and tested them to see whose was strongest!
Reading Diaries
We would like to remind you that all children should be reading at least 5 times a week. Reading more together is incredibly beneficial and it will help the children in school, especially in their English lessons!
Homework Matrix
We have uploaded this half term's Homework Matrix to Google Classroom. We would love to see some of the work that the children produce!
Chrome Books
Chrome books should be brought to school and charged, every day.
