Year 1
Year 1
We’ve had a brilliant start back in Year 1, full of curiosity, excitement, and discovery! The children have been diving into new topics with enthusiasm, and we can’t wait to share what we’ve been up to.
In Literacy we’ve been inspired by Shark Lady, the incredible true story of Eugenie Clark. The children have loved learning about her passion for sharks and the ocean! We’ve been using exciting adjectives to describe sea creatures. Our run the word last week was 'resting' and the children have come up with some excellent examples using it in a sentence. We have also been practicing writing sentences using ‘and’ to join ideas together.
In Maths, we’ve been investigating what happens when we add or subtract zero—it’s like a magic number that keeps things the same! The children have also been sorting numbers into odd and even groups, spotting patterns along the way. Have some fun by challenging your child to find odd and even numbers around the house or when you’re out and about—can they find the biggest odd number on a door or the smallest even number on a car number plate?
In science we’ve been exploring the fascinating world of animals and how to classify them into groups such as mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, and fish. One of our trickiest questions was about bats—are they birds because they fly? The children were surprised to learn that bats are actually mammals!
In Geography, the children have been developing their map skills, using an atlas to explore the four countries of the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. They’ve enjoyed spotting places they’ve heard of and learning fun facts about each country. It was great fun looking on Google Earth and zooming in to see our school once we had located the UK within Europe. They also went looking for signs of the season, using a map of our Forest School.
It’s been an exciting and busy fortnight and we can’t wait to continue our learning journey next week!
Thank you for your ongoing support The Y1 team.
