Year 1
Year 1
It is impossible to believe that we have come to the end of the half term and are now halfway through our time in Year One! We are very sad to say goodbye to Miss Mitchell who has been amazing during Mrs Walter's maternity leave. We wish her every happiness in her next adventure and we will definitely keep in touch.
In our final two weeks of Spring One we have explored our senses, created our own stamps, met Josh King from Fulham FC and many other exciting activities.
In Science we have explored our final sense, smell. This involved smelling hot chocolate (the class favourite) and vinegar (causing many sour looking faces). We tested our noses and we were detectives of smell. This was a great way to close this chapter of the human body and our five senses.
In Art we have been developing our stamp and print making skills. We had the opportunity to use small raisin boxes (after eating the raisins first) and create our very own pattern using foam. Whether it was stars or hearts we then stuck these to our boxes and made patterns in our books. There was some beautiful art created!
In History we looked at being able to see differences and changes in our own lives. We looked at how toys we played with in nursery or as a baby are no longer what we choose to play with now. Even though we still love the sand pit and mud kitchen from Nursery and Reception. We used our creativity to design what we wanted our toys to look like in 10 years. This included backpacks as jet packs, talking toys and flying stuffed animals.
In Maths we have continued our journey in equations, getting trickier by the day. We looked at one less and one more. We nailed this! We were then challenged with working out more complex subtraction and addition equations. We looked at the commutative law and how we can swap our addition equations addends around and still find the same answer! We also had fun last Friday dressing up with numbers to celebrate Number Day!
To celebrate children's mental health week we had the chance to learn and speak to one of Fulham FC's new rising star, Josh King, to find out how we achieved his dreams of making the football team and how he believes his life and stays motivated. This was a lovely afternoon.
In PSHE we looked at how we can overcome obstacles and how we feel when we achieve this. Many lovely success stories from this half-term. "I feel successful when I do an equation".
In Writing we have been reading our new book, The Lonely Beast. What a read! We have focused on the journey the Lonely Beast takes in the book. We looked at verbs and the suffix -ing. We wrote some beautiful sentences using verbs and a final piece where we retold the story of the lonely beast. Some children even visited Mrs Townsend to celebrate their beautiful writing!
In Financial Education we focused on saving and spending, where keeping to a budget was a hard challenge ! We were buying resources to build a monster and needed to decide how much to spend and how much to save. Many children were going over budget to build their monsters. This was a lovely lesson and we all learnt a lot.
