People want to know...Does TNRM work? If cats are neutered and fed daily, will they roam very far? Will cats on the LJA campus wander into the protected Kawainui Marsh right across the street, where endangered birds live?
In 2022-2023, two students, Evan Smyth (Class of '28) and Alexa Scherman (Class of '28), entered a biodiversity contest called OurEcho Challenge to ask those very questions. Taking 1st Place, the award helped fund a GPS-tracking study of campus cats. The entire student Pono Pōpoki Impact Academy collaborated to conduct a multi-week exploration into the GPS-tracked movements of campus cats.

An unmanaged Mama Cat wandered onto campus during the quiet days of Spring Break. But her place of refuge was bombarded by kids by first recess, putting her newborn kittens' lives at risk. The epic, three-day, high-adrenaline rescue mission was a record-setting event for the Pono Pōpoki Project. Hear and see the story here.
