Research & Referencing
Research
Below are simple steps to guide students on the research process:
Questioning
Planning
Gathering
Sorting
Synthesizing
Evaluating
Producing
Referencing
Students must always acknowledge their information sources in all research work (essays, presentations, etc). LBIS develops these skills and students are to use MLA (Modern Language Association) referencing style. Lessons on MLA referencing are ongoing, even as students get learn on how to use NOODLETOOLS software for referencing.
In-text citation is a brief acknowledgment (Author's Surname) of where quoted, paraphrased or summarised information has been received from. A complete mention of the author details after the in-text citation should be located in the Works Cited.
"Works Cited" section has the following basic requirements:
must start on a new page
must be arranged alphabetically
must not be bulleted or numbered
must be indented in the 2nd or extra line of each bibliographic entry
must be coherent throughout all references
NB: Please note that all students are taught on how to create in-text citations and bibliography, by the librarian.
For further inquiry, please consult your subject teacher or librarian.
Academic Integrity
The International Baccalaureate (IB) expects every school to be guided by the IBO Academic Integrity Policy (published March 2023), and to have its learners develop a culture of academic integrity. With this regard, we have our school's LBIS Academic Integrity Policy (updated March 2023) document which shares the expectations for all research work (how to reference; in-text citation and "works cited" section).
The Academic Integrity Policy also highlights the consequences and actions to be taken by teachers in case they encounter academic misconduct (or plagiarism incidents) from students. The consequences and actions taken have been classified in gradual levels and these can be read in the LBIS Academic Integrity Policy.
