What is academic writing?
Academic writing is defined as writing that is clearly structured, simple to understand, focused and has evidence for validity.
Its seeks to support the understanding of the person reading the work and has a formal tone and style. It should not be complex but rather simple to comprehend.
Each academic discipline has particular writing styles, vocabulary and types of structures that you get familiar with as you pursue your academic success in LBIS, however let us have a quick mention of few general characteristics of academic writing that seem relevant across all subjects. Academic writing is:
planned and focused: answers the question and demonstrates an understanding of the subject.
structured: is coherent, written in a logical order, and makes meaning by bringing together several researched information.
evidenced: demonstrates knowledge within the discipline/subject area and is supported by facts, opinions and arguments with evidence, that is properly acknowledged/referenced.
formal in tone and style: uses appropriate language and tenses, clear, concise and balanced. Abbreviations and informal language should be avoided in academic writing (formal tasks)
