School Redesign Story
As Hidden Valley looks to scale the micro-school’s learner-centered practices across the site, they are participating in Escondido USD’s school redesign as a part of Cohort 1.
School Design Elements
Clear Identity
Hidden Valley Middle School is a collaborative and empowering learning community built on trust, innovation, and shared leadership. Through distributed leadership, teachers, students, and families co-create a culture of voice, choice, and purpose. They are united by a shared vision of empowering learners and strengthening our community. Learning together, leading together, and growing together as the Leaders of Escondido.
Small Learning Communities
Each day begins and ends with connection. Students start in Advisory and close the day with their pack in Wellness, guided by the same teacher and group of peers who form their learning community. This consistent structure builds belonging, trust, and continuity throughout the day. Within this supportive environment, students engage in community circles, set SMART goals, and participate in regular check-ins. Together, the same core team of teachers collaborates to align instruction across subjects, ensuring each student’s learning journey is personalized and connected.
Real-World Learning
At HVMS, learning is organized around big ideas that link disciplines and mirror real life. Teachers work together to design inquiry-based thematic units that connect English, Math, Science, and Social Studies through meaningful, community-centered projects. Examples include Hidden Figures: "What can we learn from the hidden figures in our community about perseverance, innovation, and the power of unseen contributions?" and Around the World: “How do geography, culture, and history shape the way people live and interact around the world?”
In these units, students engage in authentic learning that deepens understanding and develops real-world skills. Whether designing community solutions, creating digital media, or showcasing exhibits, students learn to think critically, collaborate effectively, and communicate with purpose.
Performance Assessment of Whole-Learner Outcomes
Rather than testing in isolation, students curate digital portfolios throughout the year that include interdisciplinary learning artifacts, reflections, peer feedback, and evidence tied to the EUSD Learner Profile. These portfolios highlight growth in collaboration, presentation literacy, empowered learning, and problem-solving. Students share their progress during student-led conferences, and end of year celebrations; demonstrating mastery through authentic work and reflection.
Teacher Collaboration
HVMS educators collaborate to create connected, engaging learning experiences. They meet monthly during Thursday early release days and take part in monthly dedicated planning days to design interdisciplinary projects, review student portfolio evidence, and align outcomes across core content, advisory, and enrichment spaces such as the Career Lab, Innovation Lab, Wellness Center, and Panther Academic Center. This shared design process ensures that learning is cohesive, personalized, and centered on the whole learner.
Distributed Leadership
Leadership is a shared practice at HVMS. Students take an active role in shaping the school community through Advisory, Wellness, Grade-level Packs and WEB ("Where Everybody Belongs" mentorship program pairing 8th and incoming 6th graders), leading community events, designing initiatives, and contributing ideas to school-wide projects such as Mascot Mania (where students redesigned the HVMS mascot) and student showcases. Through these opportunities, students practice leading with empathy, initiative, and purpose; qualities that define the Leaders of Escondido.
