Every school has the potential to be a place where every learner knows who they are, thrives in community, and engages in meaningful, purpose-driven learning.
Every school has the potential to be a place where every learner knows who they are, thrives in community, and engages in meaningful, purpose-driven learning.
At Learner-Centered Collaborative, we partner with schools and districts to redesign learning environments that put learners at the center, ensuring that structures, systems, and culture align to support whole-learner outcomes.
The school redesign process is an opportunity to reimagine how time, space, relationships, and learning experiences are structured. When schools center design around learners’ needs, strengths, and aspirations, they see measurable gains in belonging, engagement, and academic growth.
Our Approach
Redesigning a school is complex, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. We guide School Design Teams through a human-centered design process that begins with empathy and ends with sustainable systems built for the future.
As outlined in the “How To” section of this playbook, we work with schools and districts from vision to implementation through the three key phases of school redesign:
Phase 1: Pre-Planning
Phase 2: Designing and Planning
Phase 3: Implementing and Iterating
As our name suggests, we use a collaborative approach with partners, creating the time and space for all voices and experiences to be heard and integrated into each phase of our work together. We celebrate bright spots, center learners, and focus on measuring what matters most to each community we work with.
Our School Redesign Work
Across the country, we’ve partnered with schools and districts leading bold redesign efforts that redefine what’s possible.
Escondido Union School District (CA)
Learner-Centered Collaborative is working with Escondido USD to redesign every school through a multi-year, cohort-based process grounded in a shared Framework for the Future. Learn more about this work here.
Colorado Springs School District 11 (CO)
In partnership with Learner-Centered Collaborative, the West PK-8 campus in D11 launched its School Redesign effort in February 2025. As of October 2025, the Design Team has gathered and analyzed community feedback, visited inspiring learner-centered school examples in Denver, defined their identity, and identified the “Big Moves” or levers for change they want to make in the 2025-26 academic year.
