There are many ways to share progress on whole-learner outcomes outside of completely shifting the entire assessment, grading and reporting structure of a system. These supplemental reports can take many forms and are a way to augment traditional grades and transcripts or even Standards-Based reporting when you want to add interdisciplinary or whole-learner outcomes. These can include supplemental reports added to the traditional report or transcript, badges and portfolios.
Hawaii Technology Academy (n.d.) provides a supplement called a Core Report in addition to traditional report cards in K-12. Learners self-assess every term on their competencies, called core values, and add evidence in their LMS (Learning Management System). Advisors also provide a proficiency level based on all of the evidence added by learners and educators over the course of the term into their LMS. Learners and educators write narratives to describe learner’s strengths and areas for improvement towards the core values.
Other reports, such as the Mastery Transcript Consortium’s Learner Record and the International Big Picture Learning Credential can also be used as supplemental reports while a system is transitioning away from the traditional transcript.
In Juab School District, in addition to Standards-Based reporting on academic subject areas, learners can earn badges towards their Portrait of a Wasp, or Learner Portrait. In the example below learners are asked to demonstrate evidence of design thinking, one of the elements of being a Critical Thinker. Learners track their evidence and badges in Canvas.
In addition, the Learning Credit badging system at Red Bridge and the badging at Mineola Elementary could also serve as a supplement to some traditionally graded systems.
Many schools and districts have moved towards portfolio systems that support learners in curating evidence over time of their growth towards Learner Portrait outcomes and competencies.
