The first chapter was founded in 1929 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The first chapter was established in the lower grades of the Webster Groves High School in Missouri. The first charter to a junior high school was granted to Clarinda Junior High School in Iowa. NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, US Territories, and around the world."

The Pride of the Southside Student Council is managed by Nakiya Matthews under the oversight of the Principal and Chapter Adviser. The student council consists of members of the Learn Hunter Perkins student body and is governed by elected student officials.
