Grade 1

January and February

For the new year, students have been very busy! We have explored singing, moving, and choosing instruments to play along with the story 'The Animal Boogie'. Also, students have talked about and listened to various Chinese instruments in preparation for Lunar New Year, and continue to work on learning notes and rhythms.

November and December

At the beginning of November, grade one students explored the song "Rainbow World" and discussed rainbows and how they represent all of us working together in harmony. The song link will be under your child's class page on the music website. Also, we've explored reading rhythms (quarter notes and quarter rests). In November and moving into December, we will be preparing our Winter song for the concert. Ms. Wallis' class will sing "I Want to be an Elf" and Ms. Stewart's class will sing "We Will Jingle". There will be a link to the song under your child's class page on the music website.

October

For October, students have exploring musical soundscapes with new songs like "Bats and Cats". To create soundscapes we ask ourselves, "what instrument or sound could we use that would match our story or song?". We've also been practicing a steady beat with our "Witch's Stew" chant. We all play an instrument, mix our 'ingredients' in the stew, and get a turn deciding what to put in our stew.

September

In September, we've learned some routine songs (like morning, lineup, and goodbye songs), and are reviewing the rules of the music room. We've been exploring keeping a steady beat and starting and stopping together. To do this, we've played games and used a variety of instruments (check out the photo slide show below!). Check out your child's teacher's page to find out which songs we're learning so your child can show you!
