        • Whichever student guesses correctly first gets to go up and draw next.

    • WEB leader #3: Stand at the front with the person drawing and help define words/run the computer if they need it.

    • If your CREW enjoys competition, you can divide them in half and play on teams (first one to guess it earns a point for THEIR team).

  • Teachers you can assist by providing the words, or you can allow the WEB leaders to use the word generator and you can play too!

          • Have students teach your CREW a new game

Fun Friday - Kickball Introduction

We wanted an opportunity for classes to get outside and have some fun. Kickball was the winning game in the decision. WEB leaders will ask you to do a couple of things, however they will take the lead in explaining. Below is what the WEB leaders have been given as instructions:

        • Introduce kickball tournament next week!

        • Ask your CREW teacher to pull up the kickball promo video and play it for the class.

        • After the video is finished, explain to your CREW class that one day NEXT week they will be competing against another CREW class in kickball to win points for their house team.

        • WEB leaders go over WHICH DAY YOUR CLASS is playing. (Teachers see schedule for your reference)

        • Then, go over the rules

        • WEB Leaders, on the day that you are playing kickball, you will go straight out the field to setup kickball after attendance - Tell your CREW class that they will meet you on the field. Field orientation document is here for reference as well

Kickball Rules

  • WEB Leaders are responsible for setup and clean up of the field. Teachers please bring the kickball (PLAYGROUND BALL) from your equipment bag to ensure we have enough.

  • Switch between batting and field after 5 outs or 5 runs. Please ensure everyone has a fair chance to bat within the time frame

  • No leading off or stealing bases

  • 3 foul balls and you are out

  • Each team will pitch to the other team. Slow to moderate pitches only.

  • A player is out if the ball is caught, they are tagged with the ball, or the ball gets to the base before they do. You cannot throw the ball at a runner to get them out.

  • Play ends when the pitcher has control of the ball

  • Bunting is NOT allowed.

  • Do not interfere with the ball when running the bases

  • Teachers are responsible for scorekeeping and refereeing, WEB leaders can play with their classes

  • Good sportsmanship should always be used

    • One WEB leader will stand in the center of the room and students will choose to move to ONE of the 4 corners.

    • The goal is to be quiet when you move to the corner so the WEB leader in the middle doesn’t guess you

    • The WEB leader in the center will name out one of the corners - if you are caught in the corner you are out of the game and you have to go and take a seat.

    • The Centre WEB leader will then close their eyes and ask their students to move to another corner. WEB leader will guess another corner and if those students are caught they are out. This pattern continues until only one student is left and they win! The student who wins, becomes the person in the center.

  • Memory Game. Three images are located here for you to use to play memory with your class. Have students look at the image for 45 - 60 seconds. Once you have given them the opportunity to "memorize" the items you can ask students to write as many items down as they can remember. This is a fun activity to test short term memory and allow students to see if they can improve their short term memory skills. A nice way to wrap up is to chat with students about what strategies they used to remember. Sharing ideas is important for students to see different ways to remember (and when it is from other peers it is more meaningful).

Thursday - Choice Day

  • Choice Day - If you had a great time with the memory game, feel free to continue that with your CREW. You are welcome to continue to with any Monday activity as well.

Once you click on Quiz #1 you can then see the logos. To begin the quiz click on "Start Quiz" See if your class can complete the quiz before the time runs out. If you are comfortable, allow a WEB leader to type in the answers as students call them out. This is an easy way for the WEB leaders to lead an activity.

Mindful Monday - No WEB leaders

A new resource has been suggested (Thanks Derek) to help with Mindful Mondays. The website http://www.mindfulgnats.com/ is going to provide us a few weeks of mindfulness activities.

Being mindful and purposeful in your breathing can allow time for your mind to refocus and adjust in stressful situations. Today would be a great day to try a breathing technique. Using this link, (from Mindfulgnats website) play one of the videos (suggest to start with the 2 second breathing). Once students have practice with the in-hold-out technique at 2 seconds, you can try to do different lengths of breathing (see videos for clarification)

As we continue to work on our mindfulness, feel free to use other techniques that you are familiar with with your students.

Talking Tuesday

Mindful Monday (PJ DAY) - No WEB leaders

Conversation starters have the ability "to get people thinking and talking about who they are, what they like, and how they interact with the world around them" - Rethink Card Deck; 56 Questions to Encourage Compassion, Shift Perspective & Build Connection

Questions have been categorized into 4 different topics. Choose one or two questions for all students to answer. Past experiences have shown that arranging student chairs into a circle will allow for the highest likelihood of participation.

Connect: What brings you the greatest happiness? (Can always ask following questions. For example: explain, why, tell me more, etc)

Gratitude: Describe three qualities you appreciate about yourself

Compassion: What kind gesture have you offered today (or yesterday, or last week)?

Insight: Share one social issue that matters to you and why.

Talking Tuesday (RETRO DAY) - Candy Jar Guessing! (Activity Suggestion - Alaa gr. 8)

  • Web leaders will show your class your candy jar. Teachers, please provide a sticky note or piece of paper for each student and ask them to write their name on the paper.

  • WEB Leaders will ask students to try and guess how many candies are in the jar.

    • Students then need to write how many candies they think are in the jar on their piece of paper.

  • WEB leaders will collect the slips of papers with the guesses (double check there is a name on the paper).

  • The answer will be announced at 9:19 over the announcements revealing the answer to the candy guesses

  • WEB Leaders will determine the winner (correct number or closest to the correct number)

  • Closest to the correct number keeps the jar of candies. If there is a tie, students can split the candy prize.

Mindful Monday - No WEB leaders

Mindfulness can be used to help when students are experiencing strong emotions. The following technique can be used as a way to reframe thinking. Trying this technique with your class on a regular basis will allow for mindfulness practices to become normalized.

As always, if you would like to have some time for coloring, listening to music, other mindful activities, please do so at your discretion.

Talking Tuesday - Planning Day for Wednesday activity (Likes and Dislikes). Each student will be given a 1/2 sheet of paper (Teachers please provide). Each student will compose a list of five things they like and five things they dislike (drawing from any experiences). The lists are then folded up and given to the teacher for safe keeping for tomorrow. I recommend asking the students to put their names on their sheets, so on Wednesday, when WEB leaders are revealing whose sheet they are referring to, they know who the author was.

Teachers: Please read through all slips of paper as they are turned in to ensure they are school appropriate.

Winning Wednesday - Likes and Dislikes Game! Using the lists from yesterday, WEB leaders can read the 'likes and dislikes' sheets of paper. It is the goal of the class to guess who is the author of each list. WEB leaders will read one slip of paper at a time and allow the class to try to guess. There should be enough time for all slips of paper to be read. If a student was missing on Tuesday, have them make their lists and add to the pile to be read.

The following short video gives a scientific basis for mindfulness. There is an amazing amount of information in the video (feel free to watch twice).

Discussion Points:

  • the physiological responses of your body during moments of frustration/anger - ex: fast, short breaths, heart racing

  • the physiological responses of your body when you are calm/happy - ex: slower breathing, deeper breaths

  • compare the responses (note the differences for each person, note the differences between the responses of negative feelings vs positive feelings.

  • What are some techniques to calm in moments of frustration?
