Make a Difference Initiative

Make a Difference Day was created by “USA Weekend” magazine in 1992 to offer community support and encourage volunteerism across the country.

Making a difference doesn't have to be just one day, it can be ongoing. It would be great to apply the one day initiative to our lives here at RMS and make a long lasting impression on our school and community.

CREW classes can decide on what difference they want to make for RMS, for Rutland or Kelowna (or the world really)... Below are some suggestions. A Google Doc has been created to document what ideas are going to be used. If you notice someone else would like to do the same initiative, team up and work together! Feel free to leave notes for other CREW classes - asking for collaboration, requesting help, etc.

Suggestions/Ideas for "Making a Difference"

Here are some possible initiatives that your CREW could facilitate. You are welcome to use these initiatives or come up with something new.

School Yard Clean up
Community Clean up
Connecting with a Long Term Facility for Senior -
- - - Write letters to the residents
    - Cards for the residents
    - Cards for the care staff
Make connections with another class via pen pals (email or handwritten letters)
Food Drive for Local Food Bank
Clothing Drive
Fundraisers

    - Homeless Shelters
    - "Make a Wish" Foundation
    - SPCA
Mentoring Programs
- - - Connecting friends at school
    - Connecting elementary school kids to the middle school
    - Reading programs to elementary school kids
Creating/Running a lunch time club
Create a program where students can call or text a friend who has been a way to cheer them up and keep them connected
Make birthday cards for other students and staff in the school
Create pieces of art
- - - For long term stays in hospital
    - Residents in hospice
    - Residents in long term facilities
Organize a "Thank you" initiative to those that give back (volunteer)
Plan a cultural awareness day for RMS
Initiate and practice Random Acts of Kindness
Run the recycling program at the school
