These lessons can be tailored to meet the needs of your class. Let us know how we can help you get started with Thinking Materials. The library has ready-to-go Thinking Materials boxes which can be borrowed by any staff member.
What is Thinking with Materials?
Thinking with Materials provides students with physical materials to help inspire and support their thinking which can lead to writing or sharing ideas out loud. It is metaphoric thinking made easy!
There are a variety of different types of materials
-Loose parts (movable objects such as rocks, gems, pinecones, buttons, etc.)
-Wire
-Paint (watercolour, acrylic, etc.)
-Pastels (oil & chalk)
-Clay & Playdough
-Tape
How Can I Use This in my Class?
-To brainstorm ideas for a project
-To have students demonstrate their learning on a topic
-To have students reflect on their learning and/or core competencies
What is my Time Commitment?
-Students will need one full block to complete an affordance study where they learn about your chosen material (ex. loose parts, paint, etc.). Students can then apply that material to the learning in your class.
-Once students are familiar with the materials they can be used in a variety of informal ways
