Top 10 Steps for Teaching Creativity
(Adapted from Sternberg & Williams, 2010, pp. 149-150)
- Share famous examples of creative people and creative thinking.
- Encourage students to ask questions, and more questions.
- Encourage students to take (sensible) risks.
- Promote persistence and grit.
- Allow (maybe even CELEBRATE) mistakes. Encourage students to find other possible solutions.
- Model and encourage divergent thinking. Predict, brainstorm, find alternate endings.
- Allow time and opportunity to experiment with various ways of knowing, being, and doing.
- Reward creativity. (Extrinsic motivators can help teach intrinsic motivation.)
- Create a classroom environment where creativity is celebrated and can flourish.
