This project started when we decided to foster 26 geraniums for a community member. Before we knew it, we were writing letter and stories, coding Micro:bit to measure temperature and light, graphing data and exploring whether or not plants needed soil to survive. Then we decided to learn about propigating plants and growing plant hydroponically. And just wait until to you hear about our work created hope for our community!
In this math project, students were challenged to build new and effective building developments given a piece of land. Students collected information about what people believed would increase their quality of life in the area and used this to design a development and build a 3d replica.
Because this project exposed some misconceptions in understanding area, we also extended the learning into a virtual space using Minecraft for Education. We could have spent the whole year on this project!
The purpose of this format was to allow students choice in how they would showcase their learning in this unit. The choice board gave students the opportunity to use a variety of tools to share with their audience all that they had come to know!
This activity was used as a way to consolidate some work that we had been doing on fractions. The purpose was for the students to work collaboratively to solve the case. The format was digital breakout using a Google Form app smashed with some with a jigsaw puzzle, matching game and visual puzzles.
I loved the engagement of the kids in this activity - everyone was participating! I also loved how they worked to help out other teams without giving away answers as they finished up. Th kids talked about this activity for the rest of the year!
These are two examples of Hyperdocs I designed for grade 6 Social Studies - one with a focus on Athen and one on the Iroquois Confederacy.
These gave us a place to build knowledge so we could come back together and have rich discussions in class. I have become a huge fan of this format for introducing and developing content.
