Safe Practices in the Art Room- Ceramics

Clay dust is hazardous you your lungs. Overtime it can build up in your lungs and cause health issues. Therefore we must take precautions while working with clay. Dry Clay: Collect in buckets with a lid. Sweep up any and all lumps of dry clay into a dustpan or bucket. Use a sponge to clean clay dust.

Spills:  Always wipe up clay spills off the floor-Wet clay is very slippery. 

Sanding Clay: Sanding bone dry clay should be done with a respirator and outside. Use a box lid under your work to collect the dust. dump the dust into the reclaim bucket.

Wheel Safety: Take your lanyards off while on the wheel. Hair ties for really long hair. 

Glazing:  Glazes contain chemicals. Although many glazes are non toxic some are not good for you. Be mindful of your glaze. NO FOOD OR DRINKS on the work surface or in your space while glazing.
