AV1 class requires students to be independent problem-solvers and responsible for creating news, short films, commercials, and podcasts using multimedia and web-based video editing software. Students are expected to be self- motivated, self-directed, task-oriented, and be able to complete tasks in a timely fashion. These characteristics are critical to the development of our school's new program. Students will engage in midterm evaluations each quarter to determine if they are satisfying the expectations of the class. Based on the midterm review, the teacher will make recommendations to determine if AVI is an appropriate placement for them.
Attendance – It is very difficult to produce great videos if you are not here to work on your projects. Your actions reflect each of us. This is not an independent class; many projects involve collaboration with your classmates. Your daily performance affects the lives of everyone else in the room and everyone expecting a video. Be here and carry your own weight.
Be a Good Steward – Please do not be wasteful with supplies. Watch your use of paper, SD cards, etc. These things quickly add up. Do not use the copier for personal use. Be respectful of school property. Pick up after yourself every day before you leave.
Positive Attitude – If everyone keeps a positive attitude and is willing to lend a helping hand, then our life will go much smoother. As we learn more skills, expectations rise and it can be stressful at times. Be aware of your stress and how it affects the way you interact with your peers.
Classroom Management – As a student of Rouse High School, you are responsible for knowing and following all policies in the handbook. I should know where you are at any given moment. Many of your tasks will require you to track information for pictures or stories. You must have a pass and you must sign out. I expect mature behavior.
Professional Dress Policy - Reporters are no different from representatives of other organizations. If they are badly or inappropriately dressed, it can affect the impression they make and the results they get. When going on interviews or creating announcements, dress in a manner that fits the situation and shows respect for the audience. Flip-flops and scruffy shirts are out. So are revealing necklines and bare midriffs. Ideally you should wear a Rouse-centric shirt or a class shirt (we will be ordering soon).
Class Participation - Journalism and film production involves a team effort, with each team member contributing. Every student is expected to be a full-fledged participant in this program. That includes arriving on time to all class sessions and engaging fully in discussions and exercises. Your assigned VOSOTs, packages, and films will be screened in class, and you will be expected to accept and give constructive comments. You will learn from honest, thoughtful critiques, and you will be expected to provide same to your colleagues.
Out of Class Work - AV students will be expected to film at least one event at RHS every six weeks. You will film/report on/edit (whatever is needed) the event (sports, fine arts, etc) for airable content. A schedule of events will be available to sign up - first come/first served for assignments.
