We are required to follow the mandatory state attendance policy in order to award credit for high school credit courses. The policy is listed below:
Per Texas Education Code §25.092, to receive credit in a class, a student must attend at least 90 percent of the days the class is offered. A student who attends at least 75 percent but fewer than 90 percent of the days the class is offered may receive credit for the class if he or she completes a plan approved by the principal that allows the student to fulfill the instructional requirements for the class.
Any student who has been absent more than 8 times for a class in a semester is required to make-up hours in order to gain credit for the class. Students who are beyond the allowable number of absences will have their credit withheld until the hours are made up. High Schools will receive notifications of the absences and held credits and will work with students to make up those hours to release the credit.
What is the difference between owing hours and truancy?
Owing hours determines whether or not a student received credit for their courses. Truancy determines whether or not a student is meeting the required attendance laws.
