Social Skills Learning is recognized as a key ingredient for school and life success. To meet these specific needs, Leander ISD adopted the Second Step curriculum. The lessons are taught by the classroom teacher in grades K-5.   The overall goal of Social Skills Learning is to increase student instructional time by helping students stay on task and decreasing behaviors impacting learning.    

The developmentally appropriate lessons are divided into four units:  Skills for Learning;  Empathy; Emotional Management; Problem Solving

Child Protection Unit  Lessons through Second Step 

To meet the required State of Texas Health TEKS for instruction on preventing child abuse, Leander ISD counselors will utilize lessons from the Second Step Child Protection Curriculum. These lessons will teach students three types of skills:  Personal Safety, Touching Safety and Assertiveness. 

Parent/Guardian permission is required for students to participate in these lessons. In late October/early November, the consent form and additional information will be shared with families via ParentSquare.
