Science Units
First Nine Weeks
Rev It Up!
Students explore types of forces: magnetic, push/pull, and gravity. Students use the Engineering Design Process to imagine and design a car that is safe, aesthetically pleasing and moves in 2 different ways. Students explore the effects on objects by increasing and decreasing sound, light, and thermal energy.
Second Nine Weeks
Journey to a New Land
Students build on their understanding of the natural world, changes in weather, and how humans affect the environment in order to understand the relationship between the physical environment and human activities. Students continue to develop their geography skills, and identify significant people and places in the community. Students engage in a problem and use their learning throughout the unit to select a location for a settlement on a fictitious newly discovered land.
Third Nine Weeks
Aquatic Habitats and Plants
The student will explore patterns, systems, and cycles by investigating physical characteristics and behaviors of organisms, life cycles, and interactions within their habitat. Students will examine how plants and animals depend on each other and their environment for survival.
Fourth Nine Weeks
Building Bridges
Students build on their understanding of matter by describing physical properties including shape, mass, temperature, texture, and flexibility and using tools. Students classify matter as solid or liquid and compare changes in matter by heating and cooling. Students investigate physically changing matter by cutting, folding, sanding, and melting. Students combine a variety of materials, complete an engineering design challenge to build a bridge, and justify the use of materials based on physical properties.
