Concert Attendance
Because choir is a performance-based class, attendance at each performance is mandatory. However, conflicts do occur. If you discover a conflict, please do your best to work it out. Choir is a group effort and each choir is a team. Missing even one person can throw off the whole performance. We are counting on everyone to show up. By missing the concert, you are letting the team down. If the conflict is unavoidable, I ask that you notify me as soon as possible. If I know far enough in advance, the choir can at least spend time rehearsing without your son/daughter so the choir isn’t thrown by the absence of his/her voice. If the student is involved in a family emergency and cannot participate in the concert, I ask that you still contact me before the concert. Many students drive, and if they don’t show up, I’ll have to spend time investigating this, instead of preparing for the concert. If a student is at school the day of the concert, but becomes ill afterschool and feels they can’t participate, I’d like to have a doctor’s excuse the next time they come to school, if possible. And again, please contact me before the concert.
Students are required to stay for the entire concert. However if there is a conflict, or a student is sick, but he/she can manage to at least perform, I can let them come to the concert immediately before their performance and leave right after they perform. I don’t want folks deciding this on their own, but we can discuss it when you contact me about the absence well in advance of the concert. Again, this is not something students or parents decide, it is an option I can possibly offer as a solution.
If a student misses a performance, a parent or guardian must contact me through email, by phone or with a note. If a parent/guardian fails to contact me through email, a phone call, or a note, the student will receive an F for the performance grade. If a student has missed a performance, and a parent/guardian has made contact through email, a phone, call, or a note, the student will be given the opportunity to make up the concert grade. I ask that you provide specific information about the reason for the absence. The make-up work consists of a score analysis, vocal proficiency, and small research paper.
Missing two performances will result in removal from the choir rehearsals. If this situation occurs, the student will be asked to do daily work in class, instead of singing in the rehearsal.
The bottom line is it is very important that students participate in all performances.
In a nutshell…
This is a performance class, so the performances are required
Not showing up negatively impacts your choir - it is very bad not to show up for the concerts!
Put the performance dates on your calendar and schedule around those dates!!!
If you find you have a conflict, let me know, then do everything you can to work it out!!!
If you can’t work it out, contact me as far in advance of the concert as possible.
If you unexpectedly miss a concert, you or your parent/guardian should contact me ASAP.
After your parent/guardian contacts me, you will be able to do the make-up work.
If no one contacts me, you won’t be offered the make up work.
It is the student’s responsibility to speak with the director about the absence. The director will not approach the student.
The make-up work is a graded vocal proficiency, score analysis, and research paper.
You’re expected to stay for the entire concert
If you have a conflict with this, talk to the director a week prior to work this out.
If you miss two performances excused or not, (and all performances count) you will be removed from choir rehearsals. You will earn your daily grade through an alternative assignment.
