50 Years with Hughes
5/26/22
Last week was the Varsity Boys Baseball’s last home game and a very easy decision to do something special for Mr. Hughes was brought to life. Mr. Hughes has been a baseball coach for Lyndonville Central School for many years but this year marked 50 years of dedication to the many teams he has coached throughout his career. There were shirts and hats made that had Hughes 50 on the back to celebrate this important milestone. John Hayes, who coached alongside of Mr. Hughes was asked to speak at the ceremony. After Hayes spoke Chris Hughes, Mr. Hughes' son, was asked to give a few words also. Chris Hughes says that “the community of Lyndonville has also been very lucky to have you” about Coach Hughes. Next up to give a speech was Mr. Hughes' grandson, Jack Whipple. Jack was lucky enough to be on his grandfather's team for his 50th year of coaching. Jack expresses how much the current generation cares for Mr. Hughes and the impact he has had on us. Jack says “When it comes to sports and school Grandpa is constant. We know that we can count on him to be there, provide assistance and say encouraging words everyday”. He goes on to say his ability to constantly stay consistent in students and athletes lives has caused those who look up to him and trust him. The last person to speak at the ceremony was Coach Price, the current Varsity Boys Baseball coach. Mr. Price says that “there are so many things to say about this man” referring to Mr. Hughes. Coach Price goes on to tell his favorite memories that he had been able to make with Mr. Hughes over the course of his 20 years of coaching with Mr. Hughes. At the end of the ceremony Mr. Hughes gives a few words and expresses how overwhelmed, grateful and blessed he is. Coach Hughes goes on to thank his wife, Virginia Hughes, and says “there wouldn’t be any of this stuff without you” Mr. Hughes is the most caring, selfless and kindhearted man that could ever impact Lyndonville. Thank you to Mr. Price for organizing this wonderful tribute for Coach Hughes!

The girls varsity basketball team made it to the semi finals for the first time in 28 years. Going into sectionals the girls were ranked the 6th seed. They beat out their competition in the first round against Alfred almond (the 11th seed), and then in the quarter finals they beat out Harley Allendale Columbia (the 3rd seed), and moved on to play York (the 1 seed), but could not grasp the win. The girls had a great season finishing with a record of 14 wins and 9 losses, which is the second best record for girls basketball in Lyndonville history. Congrats to the girls basketball team, and a huge congrats to Ella Lewis for getting invited to play in the Ronald McDonald game!

Coach Price and Coach Hughes say for this season there will be alot of unknown because they only have 5 returners, alot of their game play depends on the weather and the returners need to lead the team. Their goals are win divison and sectionals and play every game at a competitive level. Advice from the coaches is work hard and have fun.

With March comes spring and with spring comes softball. Varsity and JV softball for Lyndonville officially begins on March 14th 2022. The varsity team is coached by Joe Moore and assistant coach Rick Boyle. For JV, the coach is Alicia Hinkson, a former softball player from Lyndonville who learned many of her ways from Coach Moore.
The Varsity team has many returners from the 2020-2021 season including Gracie J, Ella L, Brynn H, Morgan A, Lorelei D, Haley S, Brianna K, Addison D, and Brooke R. Varsity and JV start both of their seasons with a non-league game against Barker at Barker High School on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 with a start time of 4:30pm. Both levels from Lyndonville have their first league game against Wheatland-Chili at Wheatland-Chili High School on Thursday, April 7, 2022 with a start time of 5:00pm.
For the varsity team, there were only two seniors lost from last season, so there is already a strong team who knows how to play together. Coach Moore says, "We have a good core of players coming back, and looking forward to this season". The team won the league title last season and went on to sectional finals to end with a record of 17-2. Proudly, I can say we are all looking forward to this softball season for both varsity and JV at Lyndonville.

This past Thursday our varsity boys basketball team hosted their second home game against Rochester Academy Charter School. When starter Trenton Muck asked how he felt about the game he responds "We need a big comeback game after the loss from Barker on Monday. We're looking to play our game of basketball". After trailing behind their last two games and not being able to come out with the win, the tigers unfortunately were not able to overcome this losing streak and their record now is 1-3. Muck scored 14 points while Noah Poler also added 16 points for the tigers. The tigers next face Newfane away.

On Tuesday night, 12/14, the Lady Tigers had a hard loss to Notre Dame. Starting right off the bat the Tigers won the jump ball and advanced up the court for an easy 2 points to start the game. The first quarter was back and forth for a high paced game, with only 4 points in the first for Lyndonville and 9 points for Notre Dame. After battling for the first two minutes in the second quarter an easy 2 pointer was made by Ashlee Stephens. Quickly after, Notre Dame bounced back with a 2 pointer for them as well. By the end of the first half Notre Dame had pulled ahead with 22 points for and only 11 for the Lady tigers. During the third Karlee Rounds scored 3, Ella Lewis 4, Lorelei Dillenbeck 6, Haley Woodworth and Addison Dillenbeck 2. This upcoming season of basketball is approaching soon and is almost started, with the first game being Thursday December 2nd vs. Albion @Albion. The returners for the Varsity girls team include Seniors, Ella Lewis, Gracie Johnson, Karlee Rounds, Brynn Howell, and Juniors, Lorelei Dillenbeck, and Ashlee Stephens. Coach Dillenbeck says he is “Very excited about this upcoming season and he believes the girls have a lot of potential to do great things this year.” He also states that he thinks coaching both the JV and Varsity will bring many benefits, “The JV girls get to watch the Varsity girls and see what we want them to be able to do in the future.” Since passes aren’t required to enter the games this year, the basketball teams are hoping for big cheering sections and the bleachers to be packed full of excitement!

Varsity
After a successful season last year, Lyndonville looks to regain the confidence they had in the previous season. After losing many important assets from 2021 graduates, Lyndonville will have to rely on their young team as they look to their seniors and returners for leadership and confidence. Trenton Muck; a starter, looks to Noah Polar to fill this role saying when asked who fills this leadership role and will always perform well simply saying "Noah Polar." After interviewing Noah Polar on this upcoming season he seemed confident and optimistic saying "Season looks pretty good. Hope for the best." With CJ Knight coaching this season under a new system from the previous year, Trenton Muck feels confident his coaching saying "Good coach who knows what he's doing. Goal is to be 500 and win a sectional game."
JV
With JV having a young team this season losing many returners to Varsity they also look to have a competitive season under a new coach Daniel Jordan. Justin Higgins on this upcoming season says "It will be interesting. We have high hopes." This confidence might be the result from a fellow teammate, Aaron Despard, who is believed by many other teammates that he will perform well. Daniel Jordan is said to push them to achieve better with a player saying that he "He pushes them." With all these factors the JV boys look to have a competitive season.

As the upcoming wrestling season is approaching the boys are extremely excited to get back onto the mat. Although the tigers have a handful of returners coming back this year they also have a huge group of upcoming talent. The boys are excited to get be back into a normal routine when it comes to their meets and visitors viewing them. We asked returner and captain Maddox Stirk how he thought the team was progressing this season and he stated that, "new people are coming up and adapting at a great pace". The boys are looking for success this season under the coaching of Joe Suhr and James Zeliff. "Its not just practicing together it's living life together; its a family", says captain Maddox Stirk, and a family it is! These boys are ready for competition this year and are putting in all the time and effort it takes to be the best!
