Rubrics & Frameworks

This list is an informal collection of rubrics for teachers/coaches/leaders to use as tools for shared learning and progress.

Focused Observation Rubrics and Observation Tools (single-topic)

Mathematical Teaching Practices Continuum Rubrics from NCSM Essential Actions -- measured on a teacher-centered vs student-centered continuum. Matches up mostly with the Idaho Mathematics Instructional Framework. (backup link)

Standards for Mathematical Practice Quick Reference NWEA Guide (backup link) - Outlines the SMPs with targeted student skills per standard including "before solving, students will be able to..." "during solving, students...", and "after solving, students...".  Potential student responses for each skill are included using 4th-grade math examples.

Youcubed Teacher Guide Rubric: How Visual is my Maths Teaching? - via Stanford Youcubed /Jo Boaler (backup link)

Levels of Classroom Discourse From Hufford-Ackles, Fuson, and Sherin (2014) (backup link)

Classroom Discourse Teacher and Student Moves - via Doing and Talking Math and Science NSF grant (backup link)

Student Engagement Framework - via Harvard MQI (backup link)

Math Teaching Practices Rubric via Louisiana Believes - A lovely rubric that outlines things to look for in tasks and practice focused on the 8 MTPs. (Institute for Advanced Study/Park City Mathematics Institute/ Created by Learning Services, Modified by Melisa Hancock, 2013)

Standards for Mathematical Practice Rubric via Ohio State Department of Education (backup link)

Standards for Mathematical Practice Rubric via Emergent Math Geoff Krall (backup link)

Idaho RMS Staff, see the SMS playbook for instructional topics outlined and their associated checklists

Rubric Frameworks

TRU Math Framework via MARS at U of Nottingham. Five areas are present on each rubric 1-The Mathematics, 2-Cognitive Demand, 3-Access to Mathematical Content, 4-Agency, Authority, and Identity, 5-Uses of Assessment. The rubrics are

MQI Framework via Harvard. Attempt to codify anything a coach might notice, including sections like "Imprecision in Language or Notation", "Teacher Uses Student Ideas", "Linking Between Representations", and so on. Harvard would appreciate your accessing the framework through their website mqicoaching.org.
