Idaho Region 2 educators:
How to Learn Math for Students via Youcubed |For students from around 4th-12th| - by Jo Boaler at Stanford - A lovely, self-paced, free course for students that teaches growth mindset and other dispositions to succeed at learning math. Spanish version available.
Mathematical Mindset Practices Rubric for Growth Mindset |For EVERYONE| - A short, self-assessment rubric that helps individuals reflect on their math mindset while introducing what a healthy, growth-mindset looks like.
ISAT Targets Summaries with Links |For 3-11th Teachers/Admin| - Outlines the major and supporting claim 1 targets per grade level with a Standards summary per target. Links to the Smarter Balanced website with interim assessments, supporting materials, DOK, target-level descriptors, and more. This document is partially updated for the 2022 adopted Idaho Content Standards for Mathematics.
9-12 Course Planning Guide - Includes the official Idaho Foundational, Advanced, and College Standards for grade 9-12. See also the 9-12 Course Planning Guide Spreadsheet with some analysis of the counts and alignment to Illustrative Mathematics AGA and the Math Badging Project.
9-12 Idaho Math Standards in Excel Format - With plain text that copies nicely. Useful for standards alignments, crosswalks, and other standards work.
How to access SBAC/ISAT Interim Example Printouts Quickly |For 3-11th Teachers/Admin| - Outlines how to grab full ISAT interim test printouts for practice and alignment more efficiently than selecting one item at a time. (Or grab the versions I downloaded linked here.) Note that these change slightly over the years, so a 2020 archive might be less up-to-date than the 2023 versions.
School Year Calendar Planning Sheets |K-12th| - An Excel-only spreadsheet that lists all of the "students in school" dates for a school year, then maps that list to a scope and sequence list. In short, you can get a projected calendar for the entire school year, but any adjustments you make will automatically update the list for the rest of the year. It automatically accounts for holidays, and you can define breaks and days that should be taken off or added back in.
Math Badging Alignment/Planning Guide |8-12th| - While the specifics of this tool are intended for Math Badging via XQ, the concepts and resources apply to anyone who wants to be more deliberate with their unit planning.
K-8 Progression Videos |K-8th| - Via Graham Fletcher - Collection of < 10-minute videos outlining the key work of grades K-8 with examples. This is on my list in two places because it's a fabulous resource.
Visual Model Progressions | SFUSD |K-5th| - A progression of the concrete and visual models for addition and subtraction in grades K–2 and another for multiplication and division in grades 3–5. (Backup PDF: K-2, 3-5)
Mathematics Focus by Grade Level |For K-12th Teachers| - via AchievetheCore - Outlines what concepts are major, supporting, and additional for grades K-8. Includes K-8 vertical alignment progressions. See also their math standards coherence map.
Depth of Knowledge DOK Wheel, Stems, and Prompts |K-12th| - Caution: DOK wheels can be misleading in the same way that math key-word strategies can be misleading for students. This resource outlines verbs that may go with each DOK level (great for writing learning objectives), provides questions and prompts for each level, and relates to Revised Bloom's Taxonomy with cognitive processes.
See also these DOK matrices via Robert Kaplinsky that help define what each DOK looks like for specific content in grade levels K-12th.
Forward Planning Tool - The Forward Planning tool helps teachers to provide just-in-time corequisite supports to students. Can be used to provide just-in-time support to students by connecting prerequisite standards or concepts - with known unfinished learning- to future grade-level standards. It should be used together with the Standards Snapshot tool.
Math Milestones |K-8th| - Via SAP. Math Milestones Grade-level Grids give example tasks for the majority of the mathematics learned at each grade level on a single page. These tasks are designed to be used formatively to reveal and promote student thinking. They have Teacher Notes, and Student Handouts to help with using the tasks. See also the Open Middle Depth of Knowledge Matrices for K-12.
Algebra Tiles -- Ways you can use Algebra Tiles in class |5th-12th| - Walks through some of the uses for algebra tiles including additional and subtraction of signed numbers, the distributive property, solving equations, factoring through trinomials, arithmetic operations on polynomials, and completing the square.
Josh's Questioning Secondary Math Content List |6th-12th| - Ever wonder what content is less important to spend time on? Here's my list based on all sorts of sources (ie, SAP docs, course progression guides such as catalyzing change in high school mathematics, invigorating high school mathematics, mathematics reimagined, revitalized, and relevant, and various journal articles and practice publications). This is likely to cause some debates; my hope is that the conversations can help us to be more intentional about what we are teaching.
Mathigon Polypad |K-12th| - html-based digital manipulatives and tools including prime factor circles (for lcm), fraction circles, Algebra tiles, polyominoes, 3d solids, 2D solids, number frames, algebra scales, coins, dice, spinners, clocks, and more. Unfold the 3D solids to see animated nets, draw and shuffle decks of cards, roll dice, create ratio pie charts, set up chess boards, dominoes, and play with logic gates. Login to save and share presets.
Math Learning Center Apps |K-12th| - simple html-based digital manipulatives including 10-frames, geoboards, clocks, and money. Can save and share presets. Developed by Bridges in Mathematics.
Tang's Word Problem Generator |K-12th, primarily K-8th| - Creates Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) categorized word problems with custom parameters!
Desmos.com |K-12th| - My favorite math teaching tool. A free suite of math software tools, including the Desmos Graphing Calculator used annually by over 40 million teachers and students. Includes professional and community-built digital classroom activities, an Illustrative Mathematics aligned 6-8 curriculum (now being used by Lewiston SD), and even a simple geometry tool (but use Geogebra for that because it has more features). Includes answer validation and feedback features and class progress management during lessons. Also used on ISAT assessments. See also, Illustrative Mathematics Desmos Algebra 2 tasks collection.
Geogebra |K-12th| - An online geometry tool that is a spiritual successor to "Geometers Sketchpad," but with a better interface and lots of tips and helps for users. Highly programmable, including support for tables, CAS, 3D, and basic probability curve sketching. Also includes a lesson or unit-making interface with answer validation and feedback features. Like Desmos, there are community-made resources (Transformations unit by 2015 Watson) and professionally-made resources sorted by Standard domains (eg, Illustrative Math tasks for each IM unit).
Wolfram Alpha |K-12th| - Fully featured Math AI and Computer Algebra System (CAS) online. Standard features are free, including CAS solving, 2D/3D graphing in any number of variables and formats, pokemon-like curves, nutrition stats retrieval per unit, Find Out How Many Things Can Fit Inside Other Things, Generate Sounds and Tones, price trends on things like gas and energy, probabilities, human body stats, and much more.
Elementary Clothesline Math Cards and Activities |K-6th| - Includes topics that spread the gambit from kinder counting to percents, fractions, and expressions.
MathOpenRef |8th-12th| - Interactive animations to visualize a whole bunch of geometry including constructions, points and lines, triangles, circles and ellipses, polygons and more. See also PhET Interactive Simulations listed on the Tasks & Practice page.
Harold's Parent Function Cheat Sheet |8th-12th| - A fairly comprehensive list of all the "parent function types" and some nice connections to the summary of "function levers".
