Want to know which rubric tool to use for a particular observation? This collection of rubrics for teachers/coaches/leaders provides research-based structures for conversations, goals, and collective efforts to build capacity.
Mathematical Teaching Practices Continuum Rubrics from NCSM Essential Actions -- measured on a teacher-centered vs student-centered continuum. Matches up mostly with the Idaho Mathematics Instructional Framework. (backup link)
Classroom Observation Tool (Embedded in Bridges) - Focused on the Mathematics teaching practices, provides an observation checklist that influences observations toward an asset-based mindset by focusing observers on what IS present instead of what is NOT.
The staff at U of Texas at Austin Dana Center want to emphasize that the IC maps below are more than just a rubric and should NEVER be used for evaluation.
Math IC Map: Mathematical Representations (MTP #3) - (backup link)
Math IC Map: Facilitate Meaningful Mathematical Discourse (MTP #4) - (backup link)
Math IC Map: Posing Purposeful Questions (MTP #5) - (backup link)
Math IC Map: Eliciting Evidence of Student Thinking ICM (MTP #8) - (backup link)

Standards for Mathematical Practice Rubric via Louisiana Believes - A lovely rubric that outlines things to look for in tasks and practice focused on the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice. (Institute for Advanced Study/Park City Mathematics Institute/ Created by Learning Services, Modified by Melisa Hancock, 2013)
Standards for Mathematical Practice Rubric via Ohio State Department of Education -- gives multiple examples/aspects for each rubric level (backup link)
Standards for Mathematical Practice Rubric via Emergent Math Geoff Krall -- uses short, understandable words for each rubric item (backup link)
Standards for Mathematical Practice Quick Reference NWEA Guide (backup link) - Outlines the SMPs with targeted student skills per standard including "before solving, students will be able to..." "during solving, students...", and "after solving, students...". Potential student responses for each skill are included using 4th-grade math examples.
The 5x8 Rubric from SERP - A Math Observation Tool that is particularly powerful for observing classrooms with ELL students and students with disabilities from a Universal Design for Learning perspective. The 5x8 Card is a product of a user-centered design process in which the user was the school principal.
Danielson Framework Evaluation Tool 2023 - Gives a short narrative and excellent rubrics for each FfT component and "Elements of Success" and "Considerations" to think about. I've downloaded this and the rest of the Danielson resources as PDFs linked here. See also the Danielson Framework Observation Tool from Montana State University.
Arizona Administrator (AMP) and Coach Math Walkthrough Tool - Math teaching practice "look fors" on a fillable sheet template. (backup link) See also, this longer list of 16 points from AMP in rubric style that is intended to be used as a comprehensive diagnostic observation tool and includes many of the same concepts as the Danielson framework.
Youcubed Teacher Guide Rubric: How Visual is my Maths Teaching? - via Stanford Youcubed /Jo Boaler (backup link)
Levels of Classroom Discourse From Hufford-Ackles, Fuson, and Sherin (2014) (backup link)
Classroom Discourse Teacher and Student Moves - via Doing and Talking Math and Science NSF grant (backup link)
Student Engagement Framework - via Harvard MQI -- an enormous collection of very specific rubrics and codes for particular aspects of classroom teaching.
Instructional Practice Goal Setting Tool from Project CALM -- gives 17 common struggles when making teaching shifts toward NCTM practices and invites readers to select some to work on. Adapted from: Smith, M., & Sherin, M. G. (2019). The 5 practices in practice: Successfully orchestrating mathematical discussion in your middle school classroom (6-8). NCTM.
Idaho RMS Staff, see the SMS playbook for instructional topics outlined and their associated checklists.
TRU Math Framework via MARS at U of Nottingham. Five areas are present on each rubric 1-The Mathematics, 2-Cognitive Demand, 3-Access to Mathematical Content, 4-Agency, Authority, and Identity, 5-Uses of Assessment. The rubrics are
Whole Class Activities: Launch, Teacher Exposition, Whole Class Discussion
Small Group Work
Student Presentations
Individual Work
Robustness of Algebraic TaskTasks
MQI Framework via Harvard. Attempt to codify anything a coach might notice, including sections like "Imprecision in Language or Notation", "Teacher Uses Student Ideas", "Linking Between Representations", and so on. Harvard would appreciate your accessing the framework through their website mqicoaching.org.
