January 2023 SSM Updates
The Seismic Safety & Modernization (SSM) new facility continues to move forward, with some significant steps taking place in the next few weeks.
Beginning February 1, the project team started to install construction fencing around the work site. The fencing encloses the K1 parking lot, all of Building 54, and areas near the loading dock for Buildings 70 and 70A.
The construction fence perimeter affects parking and pedestrian walkways.
Parking lot K1 will remain closed for the duration of construction, which is planned to last through Fall 2026. The lot will be used for construction materials and staging.
Pedestrian walkways that used to lead to Building 54, the K1 lot, and the terrace will be closed off. Pedestrian access for Building 70 will not be affected.

Other work taking place over the next few weeks includes:
Tearing down the ATM kiosk that sits in the corner of lot K1 at the top of the stairs.
Vegetation removal in the area around Building 54.
De-energizing Building 54, which includes removing wiring.
Installing eight new solar lights along Lawrence Road.
The SSM new facility will replace Building 54, which housed the cafeteria and other functional spaces, and which served the Lab for 70 years. It will centralize operations services, including a new cafeteria, centralized health services, and modern conference space, and create a thoughtful, flexible replacement building to meet the Lab’s future needs.
The SSM new facility will serve as a new front door for the Laboratory, improving the day-to-day experience of our Lab community, and our visitors.
