OVERVIEW

Centennial Bridge is an overpass where Centennial Drive crosses over the Lab's hill site at Lawrence Road. The existing bridge was constructed in 1965 and is along a hillside historically known to have landslides. The bridge is deteriorating and during a strong seismic event, the overpass could be at risk of structural failure.

Replacing the bridge is a high priority for UC Berkeley and the Lab. The State of California has approved funding for the university to design and construct a new replacement bridge in parallel to the existing one. Once the replacement is constructed, Centennial Drive would be connected to the new bridge and the existing bridge and existing roadway will be demolished. Construction will take approximately two years to complete.

UC Berkeley Project

This project is managed by UC Berkeley, however since during certain construction phases it will have significant impacts on Lab traffic and operations, the Projects & Infrastructure Modernization Division (PIMD) and Strategic Infrastructure Planning Office representatives are involved in all phases of the project to represent the Lab's interests and ensure clear communication.

Lab Updates

The Lab community will receive regular updates on the work and impacts via this page, Elements articles, and select town halls.
