Centennial Bridge Project
CURRENT STATUS: June 2024
UC Berkeley's contractors are removing the old bridge.

EXPECTED IMPACTS
Due to heavy construction activity, expect temporary lane closures and potential traffic delays along Centennial Drive from June 2023 through March 2024.
Traffic
During certain phases of the project, there will be intermittent lane reductions (alternating one-way traffic) on Lawrence Road, Bertozzi Road, and Centennial Drive, impacting vehicle traffic, shuttle schedules, and Strawberry Gate traffic.
Be on the lookout for construction equipment and personnel.
Parking
Parking lot U5 is closed for the duration of the project.
Several spaces between the EV charging station and the overpass remain closed for the project's duration.
EV Charging Station
Charging station RDWD-EVC-LVL2-1 located on Lawrence Road by the Redwood Grove between B62 and B84 (in Lot S2) is currently not impacted by construction.
Noise, Vibration, and Dust
The construction activities will be disruptive.
Expected noise will range from heavy construction equipment use to demolition related activities late in construction.
Although dust control measures will be employed by the contractor, there will be some level of dust generated by the project.
SCHEDULE
The schedule is subject to change without notice.
New Bridge Construction: June 2023-June 2024
New Roadway Opens: July 2024
Old Bridge Demo: July 2024
OVERVIEW
Centennial Bridge is an overpass where Centennial Drive crosses over the Lab's hill site at Lawrence Road. The existing bridge was constructed in 1965 and is along a hillside historically known to have landslides. The bridge is deteriorating and during a strong seismic event, the overpass could be at risk of structural failure.
Replacing the bridge is a high priority for UC Berkeley and the Lab. The State of California has approved funding for the university to design and construct a new replacement bridge in parallel to the existing one. Once the replacement is constructed, Centennial Drive would be connected to the new bridge and the existing bridge and existing roadway will be demolished. Construction will take approximately two years to complete.
UC Berkeley Project
This project is managed by UC Berkeley, however since during certain construction phases it will have significant impacts on Lab traffic and operations, the Projects & Infrastructure Modernization Division (PIMD) and Strategic Infrastructure Planning Office representatives are involved in all phases of the project to represent the Lab's interests and ensure clear communication.
Lab Updates
The Lab community will receive regular updates on the work and impacts via this page, Elements articles, and select town halls.
