Commitment to Safety at MSD
In the Materials Sciences Division, our mission is to do world-class science in a safe environment. We proudly support a strong safety culture in which all staff and visitors participate by using the proper safeguards and fulfilling all safety requirements. Here we provide documentation and resources to assist our researchers in achieving these goals.
The MSD0010 Safety Management Training is held on the third Tuesday of each month via Zoom. The course is taught by Paul Johnson, MSD EH&S Technician. Contact Paul Johnson with any questions or to register for an upcoming training session.
MSD 0015 is a Hazardous Waste Briefing for individuals who perform work for the Materials Science Division. It is for those who have already completed EHS 0604 EHS Hazardous Waste Training. Contact Paul Johnson with any questions or to register for an upcoming training session.
PI Transition Roadmap
MSD has introduced a roadmap for Principal Investigators (PIs) who are leaving the Lab. These guidelines are intended to help ensure a smooth transition for remaining personnel, and cover such topics as transferring custodianship of DOE property and chemicals; training successors and safety leaders; closing out funding awards; and ensuring smooth operational infrastructure continuity, among other subjects. Safety Corner: Ergonomics
Ergonomic injuries can easily be avoided by reducing ergonomic risk factors. The Materials Sciences Division provides comprehensive ergonomic support and services to help optimize employee safety and comfort. If you are feeling any discomfort at your office workstation or in the laboratory/shop setting. please contact Paul Johnson, our lead Ergonomic Advocate, for assistance.
In addition, the Berkeley Lab Ergonomics Program provides evaluations, consultations, and training for offices, labs, shops and material handling areas. They also stock ergonomic chairs, input devices and accessories for you to test or purchase. Please see additional resources from them HERE

MSD Safety Spot Award Nomination
Spot awards are appropriate for either individuals or groups who/which have made an extraordinary effort to improve an aspect of safety, consistently manage complex safety issues, assist others or correct a safety problem. Nominations will be reviewed and prioritized by the MSD Safety Committee. Don't forget to click on "Submit" when you are complete.
