This guide is specifically for Ubuntu Linux. Some other distributions may have a similar method of installing printers, and some of this information may help you, but this guide was created specifically for Ubuntu Linux.
Before you add the printer it would be helpful to have the printer name you want to add first. You can consult the list above or go to the printer and get the hostname off of the printer.
First open settings by clicking on the Applications button in the bottom right of the screen.
Then type settings and click on the settings app
On the left hand side of the settings window scroll down to "Printers"
If the add printer button is grayed out, you may have to hit the unlock button(top left) and type in your password.
At the bottom of the "Add Printer" window type socket:// and then the host name of the printer
Example:
socket://print3c.lbl.gov
"JetDirect-Printer" should show in the list. Select that and click "Add"
It will then prompt you to select a print driver. Generally the Generic driver will work for most printers.
On the left hand side scroll to and select "Generic" then on the right hand side click on "Generic IPP Everywhere Printer" then click "Select"
This will add your printer with the name "Generic-IPP-Everywhere-Printer." You can change the name to something more memorable by clicking on the gear icon next to the printer and selecting "Printer Details"
You can then change the name and close the window with the X in the top right corner.
You now have a printer setup which you can print to.
